Robinson Cano was shut out in the Home Run Derby a year after winning the competition, much to the delight of Royals fans. The fans booed Cano throughout the day and during the competition because he didn’t pick Royals DH Billy Butler to participate after saying he was going to choose a Royals player to be on the AL team.

A year after clubbing 32 home runs to win the derby in Arizona, Cano went 0-for-10 and was eliminated after the first round. He says the boos (which turned to cheers after he struggled) didn’t affect him.

“Well it doesn’t affect me; I’m used to that,” Cano told Buster Olney. “Everywhere the Yankees play we get booed all the time, so I get used to it.

“Well I knew [the Royals fans were upset] as soon as I picked my team. But it’s alright. Whatever they decide to do, I really don’t care about the fans. They boo, we get that a lot.”

Cano even sent the following response on Twitter:

I can’t believe I have so many fans in KC lol smh can’t win them all *kanye shrug*

— Robinson Cano (@RobinsonCano) July 10, 2012

It’s hard to say which was more embarrassing: Cano getting shut out, or the behavior of spiteful Royals fans. I think KC fans took that honor for the night.
