Chris Nelson had a go-ahead, three-run home run in the seventh inning and the Colorado Rockies overcame a career-best six RBIs by Chase Headley to beat the San Diego Padres 11-10 on Sunday. Tyler Colvin and Ramon Hernandez also homered and Dexter Fowler had three hits and two RBIs to help the Rockies win two of three to snap the Padres' string of three consecutive series victories. Headley drove in at least one run with each of his four hits, including his 23rd homer of the season, a two-run shot in the first inning. Alexi Amarista had a career-best five hits for the Padres, who had a season-high 20 on the day. With San Diego leading 9-7 in the bottom of the seventh, Tommy Layne hit Carlos Gonzalez with a pitch, Jordan Pacheco singled, and one out later Nelson homered to straightaway center against Brad Brach (1-4). It was Nelson's seventh home run of the season. Colorado added a run in the eighth, with help from a two-base throwing error by Brach that allowed Charlie Bl...

Chacin dazzles for Colorado Rockies in first start at Coors Field since return

The Rockies need Chacin to be the 2010 version.Jhoulys Chacin has arguably been the worst part of a terrible 2012 season for the Colorado Rockies. Before the season began, general manager Dan O'Dowd was on record saying that the righty, expected to be the ace of the pitching staff, was out of shape and that he was disappointed by reports that he didn't work hard in the offseason...

Colorado Rockies won't lose 100 games in 2012

The Rockies look like they are going to avoid 100 losses. There are only two teams in all of Major League Baseball that can say they haven't done it yet. The Colorado Rockies and the Los Angeles Angels are the two franchises who have never lost 100 games in a season. In July, it looked like the Angels would be the only franchise left after the 2012 season. The Rockies were miserable...

In another move as clubs were allowed to expand their rosters, the Rockies recalled right-handed pitcher Guillermo Moscoso from their Triple-A affiliate in Colorado Springs. Giambi had missed 35 games since being placed on the DL retroactive...

Lookout San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers – here come the hot Colorado Rockies...

Players of the Month - August

Hitter of the month: 3B – Chase Headley August totals: 306/345/611 – 10 HR, 31 RBI, 20 R No brainer. Easily the best single month turned in by a Padres third baseman since Phil Nevin was manning the position in Mission Valley. In August, Chase pushed his 2012 season from “nice” to “breakthrough”. Not sure if one month can change the course of an offseason, but it has...

Padres are proof that hitting is contagious

The San Diego Padres have three of the hottest hitters in the major leagues -- third baseman Chase Headley and outfielders Will Venable and Cameron Maybin. Headley was 4-for-5 Sunday at Colorado with his 23rd homer and a career-high six RBI in the Padres' 11-10 loss. The six RBI were two shy of the Padres' single-game record and the most by a Padre since Adrian Gonzalez...

Rockies 9, Padres 1

Chacin (2-4) allowed one run on five hits for his second win since coming back...

Daily Friar 9.3.12

The unpredictability of Coors Field continued yesterday. You never know who is going to win a game in that place. A deep fly ball that would be a routine out in Petco just keeps on going in Denver. That was the case last night when Casey Kelly gave up the 7 runs in the third, and Brad Brach gave up the 3 runs in the 7th. Ultimately though the Padres were done in by lack of defense...

Fort Wayne Player and Pitcher of the Month: August 2012

With just a few games left to play, Fort Wayne is the only franchise in the Padres minor league system confirmed to be in this years playoffs. With several highly touted prospects within their ranks, the Tin caps can boast several standout performances for the month of August but Catcher Austin Hedges gets the nod. Taken in the 2nd round of the 2011 draft, Hedges had a commitment...

Daily Farm Round-Up: 9-1-12

Despite a great start from Josh Spence, Tucson melts down in the 9th inning and loses 4-3. San Antonio and Lake Elsinore lose by a combined 18 runs. They both endured struggling offenses (2 combined runs) and poor pitching performances. Frank Garces turned in a great start, and Jankowski extended his hitting streak to 15 games, but Fort Wayne loses 5-3.Hitting Prospect of the Day...

Lake Elsinore Player and Pitcher of the Month: August 2012

It was noted in last month’s player feature that Catcher and DH Tommy Medica has had a breakout season.                               This month we want to highlight the return to prominence of infielder Chris Bisson. Drafted as a 2B, Bisson has played SS for the most part this season. Over the past three professional years            he has been deployed at...

Madfriars' Daily Farm Report: August 31

The TinCaps locked up a playoff spot and still have a chance to claim the second-half division title, but both Eugene and Lake Elsinore were eliminated from the playoffs Friday night. The Padres got good news from Andrew Cashner's final rehab start in Tucson and San Antonio showed some spirit as they play out the season.

Daily Friar 9.4.12

I thought the loss against the Rockies was the end of heartbreaks for this Padres team. I was proven wrong last night against the Dodgers. What started out so promising with Chase Headley’s 24th homerun, ended in utter defeat in extra innings. Any time the game goes into extra innings while the Padres are on the road I just know something bad is going to happen. It never bodes...
