The Colorado Rockies stumbled home this weekend after a 1-9 road trip. After sweeping one of the best teams in baseball, they're feeling good again. Nolan Arenado hit a go-ahead double in the seventh inning and the Rockies beat Pittsburgh 3-2 Sunday for a three-game sweep of the NL Central-leading Pirates. The Pirates came to Coors Field this weekend with a five-game winning streak. They hold a three-game edge over St. Louis, and visit the Cardinals for a three-game series starting Tuesday night. ''We pack it up and we go,'' Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. ''You honestly self-evaluate and move on and get ready to play in St. Louis.'' Pedro Alvarez homered for the Pirates. The Rockies last swept a series April 16-18 against the Mets on their way to a 13-4 start. They have struggled the last two months to fall from the top of the NL West to out of the playoff race. They bottomed out with their worst road trip since 2007 but bounced back ...

Colorado Rockies run streak to four straight behind Jhoulys Chacin's gem, offensive outburst

Jhoulys Chacin has had a breakthrough season for the Rockies.Who would have ever thought this? The Colorado Rockies one of the best one-two punches at the top of their rotation in all of the National League. When Jorge De La Rosa has a good outing, it seems like it puts a charge into Jhoulys Chacin to go out and have a great game himself, then De La Rosa raises the bar a little higher...

Michael Cuddyer Trades Bat for Cards, Shows Off Magic Tricks in New York (Video)

Michael Cuddyer has been tearing it up on the diamond this season for the Rockies, hitting .328 and knocking in 66 RBI, but swinging a big stick isn’t the only trick the All-Star has up his sleeve. Cuddyer traded in his ball cap for a top hat, and took on a Magic Mike persona – not that Magic Mike — when the Rockies were in New York taking on the Mets during the first week...

Pittsburgh Pirates to skip Gerrit Cole’s next start

There has been speculation that the Pittsburgh Pirates would skip Gerrit Cole’s next start. On Sunday, the Pirates announced Charlie Morton, Francisco Liriano and A.J. Burnett as the starters for the series starting Tuesday in St. Louis. Skipping Cole’s next outing would give the young right-hander a few extra days of rest and help reduce Cole’s innings, which will be a concern...

Rockies 6, Pirates 4

Dexter Fowler had two hits and two RBIs and the Colorado Rockies used a big sixth inning to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-4 Saturday night. The start of the game was delayed 1 hour, 48 minutes because of a weather cell that slowly moved into the area before the first pitch. Heavy rain and lightning hit Coors Field after the scheduled 6:10 MDT start. The Pirates have lost two straight...

Pittsburgh Pirates: Charlie Morton finds his groove

For Pittsburgh Pirates starter Charlie Morton the last year and a half has been an uphill battle, the surgery, the rehab and the return. Morton has had his share of struggles since returning to the lineup for Pittsburgh in June. He has had success with his sinker and is throwing a harder fastball than before his injury, but control has been an issue for the right-hander. He is also...

Video: Michael Cuddyer is a magician with both bats and cards

Your browser does not support iframes.Colorado Rockies All-Star outfielder Michael Cuddyer is pretty good with a baseball bat. After all, the 13-year veteran did put together a 27-game hitting streak earlier this season, and he currently ranks third in the National League in batting average (.329).Do you know what else Cuddyer is good at besides hitting? Apparently, the art of magical...

Prospect Watch: Rocky Start to Taillon’s Triple-A Career; Meadows and Bell Homer

TOP OF THE SYSTEM A look at how the current top 20 prospects did today.  Note that this list doesn’t include players currently in the majors. If a player is in the majors, he will be removed, everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. Rankings are from the mid-season rankings, and links on each name go to their Pirates...

Game 116 Preview: Pirates vs. Rockies

Pirates (70-45) at Rockies (53-64) 8:10 PM–Coors Field, Denver MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT The Pirates hopefully “showered well” and will look to bounce back from last night’s brutal loss at Coors Field. They’ve done a pretty good job of recovering from losses like that this season. The most recent one was the 13-0 drubbing against St. Louis – and after one more loss the...

Pirates Prospects is Changing Servers

As I mentioned last night in First Pitch, the site has been in the process of changing servers today. At some point in the next 24 hours you will switch over to the new server. The site won’t be any different, and the only way to tell you’re on the new server will be this post. If you can access this post, you’re on the old server. If you can’t access this post, you’re...

Pirates Free Andrew Lambo, Sign Catcher.

Well…  He’s free.  Hot hitting outfielder Andrew Lambo has been called up by the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Lambo’s power has been nothing short of astounding this season between AA and AAA. A lot of people assume Lambo is older than he is. He’s only 24 despite spending seven seasons in the minors. For Lambo it’s the…

Pirates Agree to Terms With Kelly Shoppach

The Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to terms with Kelly Shoppach on a minor league deal, and have assigned him to Indianapolis. Shoppach has spent time this year with Seattle and Washington, before being released on July 31st by the Nationals. He hit for a .196/.293/.346 line in 107 at-bats with Seattle in the majors, which is well below the .782-.865 OPS at the height of his career...

Cards face Pirates in a three-game, not-yet-must-win series

ST. LOUIS -- With two more series to come with the Pirates after this week, this upcoming three-game set hardly is a must-win for the Cardinals in the race for the NL Central. Only three games separate the teams heading into Tuesday night. But in the race for respect, the Cardinals could use a couple of victories. Their struggles against Pittsburgh are not limited to this season...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Colorado Rockies – Game 117

Please let this series from Hell just end with no one getting hurt today!  Starling Marte is day to day.  Pedro Alvarez?  Who knows. The only bright spot is that the Cardinals and Reds both lost yesterday.  That’s the only silver lining, the fact that the Pirates didn’t lose ground. A.J. Burnett clearly ran out…

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Colorado Rockies – Game 116

Clint Hurdle did two wildly different things last night in terms of using pitchers.  The first thing he did infuriated me.  He kept Francisco Liriano in to get abused. Sometimes I see the value of this.  Your fourth or fifth starter has to nut up to save a decimated bullpen.  Fine.  Charlie Morton hung out…
