Todd Helton hit a two-run homer off closer J.J. Putz in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Colorado Rockies rallied for an 8-7 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on a rain-soaked Saturday night. With two outs, Helton belted his first homer of the season down the right-field line and the towering shot stayed just fair. He raised his hands in the air as he rounded the bases and was mobbed by teammates at home plate. Tyler Chatwood (1-0) pitched two innings and gave up a run to earn the win in relief. The Diamondbacks were trailing 5-1 when the game was halted by a relentless downpour after four innings. But the 71-minute break energized their bats and they came out of the clubhouse swinging.

Raising Helton: Todd delivers again for the Colorado Rockies

Helton delivered again on Saturday.Friday night wasn't enough for Todd Helton. On Saturday night, with the rain and wind making it completely miserable to be playing or watching baseball, it looked like the Colorado Rockies would be the victims of an ugly, weather marred game.Instead, for the second straight night, a veteran in his twilight showed that he still has some gas in...

D-backs look to even series in Colorado

Todd Helton's production - of lack thereof - has been directly impacting the Colorado Rockies so far this season. Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez are also vital to the team's prospects. The Rockies could use another strong effort from the trio of sluggers Saturday night as they try to win back-to-back games against the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks for the first time...

Colorado Rockies continue to strive for mediocrity behind Jim Tracy

Jim Tracy continues to manage the Rockies out of wins.eJim Tracy has a message for Colorado Rockies fans.Don't buy a ticket on Sunday's. In fact, don't bother to even watch the game on TV, listen on the radio, or pay attention at all. There is no reason. There is no plan for the team to win the game. It is viewed as an exhibition game, giving non-starters a day to feel...

D-backs try to avoid sweep vs. Rockies

While one of their top young sluggers recovers from strep throat, more than a few Colorado Rockies fans may have hoarse throats after the first two games of their series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. That's because grizzled veteran Todd Helton is showing he's got plenty of pop left in his bat. Coming off a pair of dramatic wins, Helton and the Rockies go for a three...

Gonzalez out of lineup with strep throat

Carlos Gonzalez has strep throat and is out of the lineup for Colorado's game against Arizona. He was feeling under the weather on Friday, but played through the illness. Tyler Colvin took Gonzalez's place in left field and batted sixth in the order Saturday. Gonzalez is hitting .290 this season with four RBIs. He's still looking for his first homer of the year. Before...

D-backs come home to face struggling Pirates

Chris Young is off to another strong start, and there's good reason to believe he can keep it going against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Young has keyed the Arizona Diamondbacks' best start in four years heading into the opener of a 10-game homestand Monday night against the Pirates. Having a hot bat out of the gate is nothing new for Young. He hit .302 with three homers and...

Chacin stuck in a losing streak

Rockies RHP Jhoulys Chacin has lost five straight starts. He lost his last four starts in 2011 and lost again Monday to the Giants when he gave up four hits, five runs and five walks in four innings and lost 7-0. After his last win Aug. 28, Chacin closed out the '11 season with losses in his last four starts, two of them to the Giants.

Willie Bloomquist, Leadoff Hitter

Willie Bloomquist has been playing baseball for a long time. This will be his 10th full year in the Majors, and in the previous nine, he has never been even an average hitter. Despite this, Bloomquist has started the season as the D-backs’ leadoff hitter, a role he filled nearly half of the time last season. He has started the season hot, but history tells us that will not last...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Arizona Diamondbacks – Game 10

I’m going to say something out of the ordinary for me.  Kevin Correia has to stay in the rotation. I can honestly say that I didn’t have him pegged for the first win of the season.  Oh well, I still think he is a marginal pitcher. First Pitch: 9:40 PM EST Where to Watch:  Root [...]

Game Picks - Sunday: April 15, 2012

You know a picking day has gone bad when Heath Bell blows another save for the Marlins and you need a Todd Helton dramatic late homer just to finish the day a game under .500. So many things went wrong that a post would be needed just to list them all. But this picker overslept this morning and if today's picks don't hurry up and write themselves, then some of today's...
