The consistently under-appreciated outfielder Seth Smith has finally been granted his freedom from the grips of an undefined role in Colorado.  While Smith always showed promise, the Rockies maddeningly appeared hesitant to grant him a full time featured role in their outfield.  In 2011 Smith hit .284/.347/.483 with 32 doubles, nine triples and 15 home runs.  While Smith's lifetime numbers away from Coors Field are dramatically worse, he seemed to hit no matter where he was in 2011, perhaps illuminating his continued progression toward becoming an everyday player.   In return for Smith's services the Athletics have sent Guillermo Moscoso and Josh Outman to Colorado.  The 28 year old Moscoso has bounced around the AL West in his brief major league career, but proved to be a valuable starter for Oakland in 2011.  Moscoso posted an 8-10 record with a 3.38 ERA across 128 innings and stabilized the back end of the A's rotation which effectively kept them in the AL West race l...

Seth Smith Traded to Oakland

Before last season, I had touted Seth Smith as somewhat of an undervalued asset to fantasy baseball players. He was on many of my teams in which the league stretched to 14-plus teams and, for a good part of the season, he was a borderline top 100 fantasy player. He had too really bad months, July and September, which unfortunately brought his overall numbers down. Another reason...

Oakland Acquires Seth Smith From Colorado

The Oakland Athletics continued to demolish their pitching staff by trading starting pitchers Guillermo Moscoso and Josh Outman to the Colorado Rockies for outfielder Seth Smith. Smith gives Oakland a solid outfielder and a legitimate cleanup hitter for a team lacking in offense. Smith has hit .296 in his career at Coors Field and batted .257 on the road so expect his average to...

Rockies avoid arbitration with OF Smith (AP)

The Colorado Rockies and outfielder Seth Smith have agreed to a one-year deal, avoiding arbitration. Smith has spent the last three seasons with the Rockies, playing both left and right field, and has a .275 batting average with 51 homers and 181 RBIs in 487 major league games. He hit .284 with 32 doubles, nine triples, 15 homers and 59 RBIs last season.

Rockies ship Smith to A's for two hurlers

A day after signing outfielder Seth Smith, the Rockies dealt him to the A's for a pair of pitchers, Josh Outman and Guillermo Moscoso.

A’s acquire Seth Smith to help revamped outfield

You just knew Billy Beane and Dan O'Dowd — two of baseball busiest general managers this winter — were going to hook up eventually. They found their match on Monday — completing their fourth deal together in a little over four years — as the Oakland A's acquired outfielder Seth Smith from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for pitchers Josh Outman and Guillermo Moscoso...

The BP First Take: Tuesday, January 17 by Daniel Rathman

Eight years ago, Seth Smith was backing up Eli Manning on the Ole Miss football team.  Now, he’s backing him up in the headlines.  A day after Manning helped the New York Giants reach the NFC title game, Smith was traded to the A’s for Guillermo Moscoso and Josh Outman.  The 29-year-old Smith was rumored to be on the trade market since the start of the offseason, but general...

A's acquire Rockies outfielder Seth Smith in deal for Guillermo Moscoso, Josh Outman

Continuing their flurry of offseason moves, the A's traded pitchers Josh Outman and Guillermo Moscoso to the Colorado Rockies on Monday for outfielder Seth Smith.

Some thoughts on Moscoso

Part of the Rockies’ return package for Seth Smith is right-hander Guillermo Moscoso, who made 21 starts for the Athletics in 2011. Moscoso had some cups-of-coffee with the Rangers as a reliever in 2009 and 2010, but last year was the first time we got a good look (128 innings) at what Moscoso he has to offer. In short, he has a decent fastball and underwhelming off-speed pitches...
