This was a night that helps explain why Rockies owner Dick Monfort wants Walt Weiss back as manager. Thursday the Rockies played 15 innings in a game that lasted about as long as Kim Kardashian's last marriage. Weiss who enjoyed the win as much as any this season told his players to report later to the ballpark Friday. These are quiet gestures that go a long way during a six-month six-games-a-week season. But they look hollow if the players don't respond to the freedom. Jhoulys Chacin wobbled in the first inning Friday then regained his footing. He made a big splash with a two-run homer in the Rockies' 9-4 victory over the Diamondbacks leaving the paid Coors Field crowd of 38247 with a reason to cheer beyond the postgame fireworks show. Chacin has enjoyed a terrific season exceeding expectations after last year's right pectoral injury. He picked up his 14th victory but even more impressive is his 2.63 ERA over his last 14 starts. He has one outing left this year to eclipse 200 innings pitched for the first time in his career. Chacin will remember Friday for his third-inning moon ball to left field which tied the score 2-2. It was one of several loud swings for the Rockies in their 42nd home win of the season second only to the Dodgers in the division. Charlie Blackmon Corey Dickerson (whose shot ricocheted off the second-deck facade) and Troy Tulowitzki also homered for the Rockies. Tulo hit his 24th homer second-best among major-league shortstops. He is 5-for-17 on this homestand with seven RBIs. These wins matter little in the standings. But at the very least they reflect a Colorado team that hasn't checked out a criticism leveled the previous three Septembers as the Rockies hit the skids.
