Colorado Rockies first baseman Todd Helton will undergo season-ending surgery to his shoulder and hip this week, MLB.com reported. The surgery, which will repair a torn right labrum and damage in his hip, will take place on Friday, 10 days before his 39th birthday. Helton was on the 15-day disabled list after the All-Star break, and he has played six games since then. "We knew when I was on the DL that [the labrum] was torn, there was something wrong with the bone and then there was cartilage messed up," Helton told MLB.com. "I was going to give [playing] a shot. I wanted to finish the year, but it wouldn't have been the best outcome. If I wanted to play next year, it was best to go ahead and get it done so I can be ready for Spring Training." The 2013 season will be the final year of his contract and he will earn $5 million. Helton is batting .238 with seven homers and 37 RBIs.
