MLB Injury News:
The Colorado Rockies removed closer Rafael Betancourt from last night's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks due to a groin injury, according to Thomas Harding of MLB.com.
Betancourt came on in the 10th inning and threw two uncharacteristic pitches to slugger Paul Goldschmidt. He was then afforded a few additional tosses to see how he felt, but Colorado ultimately opted to remove him from the contest in favor of Wilton Lopez.
Earlier in the season, Betancourt was battling a groin ailment. He's been pitching through tightness in the area since late last month, and it appears that it's finally caught up to him. He'll undergo an MRI to determine the extent of the damage. Until the results are reviewed, it's unclear if Betancourt will be sidelined for an extended stretch.
Betancourt said he's not experiencing much in the way of pain, but he did admit that the injury is impacting his ability to pitch.
"It's not painful," Betancourt said. "It was
feeling weird warming up. I always push a lot from that leg. I came into the
game, bounced the first two pitches. Feel like weak. It was getting tight.
That's all. I'm the kind of guy that it's hard for me to come out of the game.
But I think it was the right move to do in that situation. Tomorrow, I get an
MRI, but I think everything's going to be fine, and we'll go from there."
Prior to the injury, Betancourt had been solid as the Rockies' closer. The 38-year-old maintained an ERA of 1.56 with a 1.096 WHIP and 10 saves over 19 appearances. In Betancourt's absence, the Rockies are likely to turn to Lopez and left-hander Rex Brothers when save opportunities arise.
