Denver, CO. With the resignation of Jim Tracy, the Colorado Rockies should roll the dice and name Jason Giambi manager for the 2013 season. Giambi has in essence been a player/coach since joining the Rockies organization. Many players such as Dexter Fowler and Troy Tulowizki participate in the Giambi off season program in Las Vegas, so he already has the ear of two of the best players on the Rockies roster.
Looking outside of Giambi as the new Rockies skipper will obviously be a priority, but who is going to come into the situation the Rockies find themselves in? No control over the team when it comes to the pitching rotation and players on the field is not the picture of perfection for experienced mangers with records of success. Giambi would be the perfect fit with Bill Geivett calling the shots. Let Giambi be the players coach with Geivett pulling the puppet strings for a few years until this young team can jell into experienced veterans.
Needless to say, losing Tracy is a huge mistake for the Colorado Rockies. He felt he was not the man for the job because all power was taken out of his hands. An organization can’t use the trickle down effect to run a team on a daily basis. How can a manager not only manage but also get the respect of his players when he isn’t making the every day decisions on the direction of the team. Giambi would be willing to consider managing instead of trying to play again in 2013 according to sources close to Giambi. By putting him in the manager spot, the Rockies may be able to retain the interest of season ticket holders for at least one more season and who knows, maybe they will be able to come closer to the .500 mark with a new leader who is closer to the players than any other manager can be.
