SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Willy Taveras arrived as piece of a nostalgia. A mere mention of his name brought back memories of 2007, and well, little else. But something funny happened on Taveras’ way back to the obscurity of the minor-league fields. He has played exceptionally well this spring.
He’s still a longshot to make the roster, what with the Rockies currently committed only to keeping four outfielders as a way of carrying Jason Giambi as a bench weapon. But the Rockies still have an open spot until April 10 when a fifth starter necessary.
Taveras has hit .304 with five stolen bases and played a terrific center field. Where will that lead him? It’s no secret that Rockies like his ability to bunt and steal bases. Beyond Dexter Fowler, the Rockies have a base-stealer in the lineup. Carlos Gonzalez canThe Rockies don’t have a backup center fielder if Dexter Fowler is injured or falters.
