Wandy Rodriguez left today’s game in the first inning after recording one out, pointing to his left elbow. The Pirates later announced that Rodriguez left the game with tightness in his left forearm. That’s the same injury that Jeanmar Gomez had earlier in the week (although the right arm, obviously), and Gomez went on the disabled list. It seems likely that Rodriguez will go on the disabled list, although nothing is official at this point. If that does happen, who do the Pirates have left to replace Rodriguez? Charlie Morton was scheduled to make a rehab start for Indianapolis on Saturday, throwing 95 pitches. He could make that start in the majors, but that would just replace Gomez. Before getting to a potential replacement for Rodriguez, let’s look at when the Pirates will need a starter. The Pirates have an off-day tomorrow and Monday, so they could get creative with the rotation. Assuming everyone needs to throw on five days rest, here is what I’d do with the upcoming schedule ...

Wandy Rodriguez Does Not Expect to Go on Disabled List

Pirates left-handed pitcher Wandy Rodriguez told Michael Sanserino of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that he has inflammation in his left arm and not a more serious injury. Wandy Rodriguez said he will likely avoid a trip to the disabled list. Said tests revealed inflammation. Will throw this morning. #Pirates — Michael Sanserino (@msanserino) June 7, 2013 Rodriguez left his start...

Wandy Rodriguez has forearm tightness

Wandy Rodriguez left his start Wednesday in the first inning after facing just four batters, complaining of tightness in his forearm. Rodriguez has 6 wins and a 3.59 ERA on the season. Charlie Morton could be removed from his rehab assignment to fill Rodriguez’s rotation spot should he need to miss starts. This could potentially be a big blow for the Pirates chances of remaining...

Pirates' Rodriguez exits with forearm tightness

Pittsburgh's Wandy Rodriguez has left his start against the Atlanta Braves with tightness in his left forearm after recording only one out. The left-hander pointed to his forearm when visited by manager Clint Hurdle and a Pirates trainer in the first inning Wednesday. After a brief discussion on the mound, Rodriguez was removed from the game. Rodriguez gave up two hits and...

Rodriguez lasted only 14 pitches before he was visited on the mound by the Pirates' trainers and manager Clint Hurdle. Prior to his exit, the southpaw allowed Andrelton Simmons...

No structural damage for Wandy Rodriguez, Gerrit Cole could start on Tuesday

It's been a rough week for the Pirates, but there's some good news for them today; Michael Sanserino says that the tests done on Wandy Rodriguez's elbow revealed only inflammation (thus, no structural damge) and that Rodriguez is optimistic he could avoid a trip to the disabled list and may start for the Pirates as soon as next Thursday. Sanserino also says that Charlie...

If Wandy Rodriguez goes on the disabled list, the Pirate should seriously consider calling up ...

Gerrit Cole has not had the season in Triple-A that any of us hoped that he'd have. He racked up high pitch counts early on on the season, then struggled badly with control for a stretch, then gave up 12 runs (11 earned) in 11 innings over two starts on May 14th and May 19th. Since those two bad starts (the one on the 19th was particularly bad), Cole's bounced back some....

Game 60: Braves 5 Pirates 0

If you asked me for a worst-case scenario from this one, I would've said, "Wandy Rodriguez leaving the game in the first inning, pointing to his elbow." If you asked me for a second-worst case scenario from this one, I would've said, "Shut out by Julio Teheran with 11 strikeouts, two walks and a hit."  Not much else to say here. There's no word...

All of Your Super Two/Arbitration Clock Questions Answered

When will Gerrit Cole pass the Super Two cutoff? I’ve been getting Super Two and arbitration clock questions all day, probably because of the Wandy Rodriguez injury and the chance that Gerrit Cole could come up soon. Rather than answering these over and over, I’m going to go over the deadlines here. Then I can just send people here when I keep getting the questions over and over...

Pirates place Jeanmar Gomez on DL with strained forearm

Pittsburgh Pirates right-handed Jeanmar Gomez exited Sunday’s start after experiencing tightness in his forearm. The Pirates wasted little time moving Gomez to the 15-day disabled list, as they officially listed his injury as a strained forearm. To make room on the active roster, the #Pirates have placed RHP Jeanmar Gomez on the 15-day D.L. due to right forearm inflammation...

A very early start

The Pirates and Braves go at it at 12:10 this afternoon, with the Pirates looking to avoid their first sweep since their ugly trip to Los Angeles back at the beginning of April. The Pirates are not playing well right now; they've lost two in a row and four of their last five. It's worth noting, though, that you don't have to pull your focus back that far to put things...

Pirates place RHP Jeanmar Gomez on 15-day DL

The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed right-hander Jeanmar Gomez on the 15-day disabled list with an inflamed and strained right forearm and optioned outfielder Alex Presley to Triple-A Indianapolis. The Pirates recalled right-hander Jared Hughes and selected the contract of right-hander Ryan Reid, each from Indianapolis, before Monday night's game against the Atlanta Braves. ...

Bullpen moves and the Braves

Yesterday's ten-inning stint by the bullpen made it inevitable that the Pirates were going to have to do some shuffling for the coming series against the Braves, and today we know what that shuffling is. Jeanmar Gomez is headed to the 15-day disabled list with the forearm tightness (which is pretty ominous sounding), Alex Presley is heading back to Triple-A, Phil Irwin is going...
