Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks has been unable to break loose at the plate this year.

If Weeks weren't among the NL leaders in walks, his skid would be even more disastrous. However, manager Ron Roenicke said he didn't think the time had come to give Weeks a day off.

"Actually, I think his at-bats have been better," Roenicke said. "He did something a little different with his hands (Tuesday), and I actually thought he was on time with most of his swings."

Weeks went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts Wednesday in the Brewers' 2-1 loss to the Cincinnati Reds.

Roenicke said every player faces a loss in confidence during prolonged slumps, and Weeks is no different.

"When you're confident, you can put your hands anywhere you want to put them and you'll hit the ball," he said. "If you're confident, you will see the ball better. That's proven; it's a fact.

"When you're confident, everything is relaxed and your vision is better. When you're not confident, when you're pressing a little bit, whatever the muscles are that do that, you don't see the ball as well. You can see it happen."

Roenicke said he has kept an eye on Weeks to see if frustration is getting the better of him. Thus far, he has detected no such thing.

"He still talks like he's fine," Roenicke said. "When I talk to guys, I can tell when they're frustrated and they need a day (off). Rick's not there. Until he is there, we'll keep going at it. If he continues to struggle, I'll talk to him again about taking a day somewhere."
