Austin Romine was at the doorstep. After a late season promotion to Triple-A last season, he figured to start the year there again with the possibility of a promotion to the Bronx if the Yankees needed him.
Well, Russell Martin‘s bat has been pretty weak this season and if he was healthy you have to wonder if the Yankees would have considered using Romine in his place. Unfortunately though Romine hasn’t played all year after he was put on the shelf in spring training with a back injury that stemmed from an incident last August.
Finally now, after months of inactivity, Romine announced on Twitter that he has been cleared for baseball activities so he can finally begin his 2012 season.
Romine will likely have to go through almost a spring training’s worth of work before he’s even ready for the minor leagues. So expect him to return to the Triple-A lineup sometime around the All-Star break. The Yankees would probably want him to do at least a month in Triple-A before considering him for a call-up.
At this point though it likely means we won’t see him as much more than a September call-up this season. The only reason they might consider pushing him to the Bronx this year would be if Martin’s bat continues to be so putrid that the Yankees want to see if Romine can handle the Major League job next season so they can let Martin walk via free agency after the season ends.
At least the Yankees have options right now. If Romine had sat on the DL any longer and they might not have even have had that.
