The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled right handed pitcher Ross Ohlendorf, and have designated left handed reliever Joe Beimel for assignment, per a team press release.  The Ohlendorf recall was expected, as he is scheduled to start tonight for the Pirates.  The Beimel move isn’t a big surprise, as he’s struggled with the Pirates this year when healthy, with a 5.33 ERA in 25.1 innings.

Buster Olney mentions that the Yankees and Phillies could be two teams interested in Beimel.  While the left hander has struggled, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him picked up by another team.  Aside from being left handed, which is always in demand, he’s had good historical numbers, which would probably give him the “change of scenery” advantage with other teams.  If another team claimed Beimel, they would be picking up about $300 K for the remainder of the year, so the overall cost wouldn’t be huge.

The move opens up a spot on the 40-man roster.
