Roy Oswalt will, indeed, pitch this season. The 34-year-old right-hander has reportedly reached a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers. If he passes a physical the three-time All-Star will join Triple-A Round Rock this week.

The deal was announced during the Rangers’ game against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night.

Oswalt was interested in joining the Rangers this offseason but the two sides failed to reach a deal, and Texas felt comfortable with its starting rotation at the time.

In 2011 with the Philadelphia Phillies, Oswalt started 23 games and finished with a 9-10 record. He completed 139 innings and finished with a 3.69 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP.

He wasn’t as good as he had been in the past, but back issues troubled him all season. While he’s older and isn’t in the kind of physical shape he used to be in, I’m confident Oswalt can add something to Texas’ rotation.

A source told ESPN’s Karl Ravech that if Oswalt is called up by July 1 he gets and $8 million prorated salary. That works out to roughly $4 million. He can also make an extra $1 million if he makes 10 starts.

Oswalt had interest from the St. Louis Cardinals, the Phillies and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

In 339 career appearances over 11 seasons with the Houston Astros and Phillies, Oswalt boasts a 159-93 record, a 3.21 ERA, a 1.19 WHIP and has 1,759 strikeouts.
