Today, Roy Oswalt was expected to announce where he'd be playing in 2012. Instead, he announced that he'd be waiting until a contender had an opening. ESPN's Jerry Crasnick initially floated the idea of Oswalt waiting until midseason, while ESPN's Jim Bowden confirmed the report on his Twitter feed.

Oswalt ruled out signing with the Rangers, Cardinals, and Red Sox coming into the day, and that left the field for his services a little sparse, considering his desire to play close to his home in Mississippi and wanting to play for a contender as well. Oswalt will be waiting for an injury in a contender's starting rotation to sign, and he'll be a nice upgrade for a team looking for a boost.

I still think the Rangers are the favorite for Oswalt's services, due to their relative proximity to Oswalt's home, their status as a contender, and the fact that their starting rotation lacks a veteran to really lead them. If Yu Darvish struggles in America, Neftali Feliz can't transition well to the rotation, and guys like Matt Harrison, Colby Lewis, Derek Holland, and Alexi Ogando can't hold their own, wouldn't it make a lot of sense for Texas to bring in the former Astros star?

One team that I think you can rule out is the Braves, who have a solid five man rotation (even with Tim Hudson expected to miss the first month of the season), solid minor league depth, and limited finance. He's been linked to the Braves in the past this offseason, but I think a lot of that is coming from people who don't know the organization very well, because he never seemed like a great match to me.
