KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Less than 24 hours after infielder Elliot Johnson made a crucial error that allowed two unearned runs in a 5-2 loss to the Marlins, the Royals designated him for assignment, thus removing him from the 40-man roster. The Royals now have 10 days to either trade or release Johnson, who is out of minor league options. If Johnson were to clear waivers, the Royals could outright him to Triple-A Omaha during this period. The Royals needed to make room on their roster for newly acquired Emilio Bonifacio, an infielder who can play all of the infield positions as well as the outfield -- just like Johnson. The Royals chose to DFA Johnson over Jamey Carroll, who was just acquired last Sunday but who is hitless in six at-bats with the Royals. Johnson's offensive woes are much worse: He is 0 for his last 31, and just 1 for his last 53. And his error Wednesday -- a rather routine grounder rolled right between his legs -- may have made the decision to DFA him much easier...

George Kottaras is Much Better Than You May Think

I’m going to say something which may ruffle some feathers. Salvador Perez is a little overrated. But I’m going to follow that up with something that hopefully will win everyone back, George Kottaras is very, very underrated. He’s also the best back-up catcher in baseball and is as much the reason The Royals are on this hot streak as anyone else on the team. The praise for...

Emilio Bonifacio Traded to Royals

The Kansas City Royals have acquired veteran utility infielder Emilio Bonifacio from the Toronto Blue Jays.  The Royals will send either a player to be named later or cash to complete the deal. This is the second utility infielder that the Royals have acquired this week.  On Sunday they picked up Jamey Carroll from the Minnesota Twins. It has been a rough year for Bonifacio, so...

Tweet from ‘mustacherides69′ makes it on Kauffman Stadium scoreboard (photo)

During a recent Kansas City Royals game at Kauffman Stadium, some wisenheimer managed to get his tweet up on the scoreboard. Yep, that tweet comes courtesy of “mustacherides69,” who very well could have been wearing a “Big Johnson” t-shirt at the ballgame. It’s funny because it’s a sexual reference. Well played, sir. Although the best […]The post Tweet from ‘mustacherides69′...

Duffy, Shields sparkle as Royals sweep doubleheader over Tigers

Danny Duffy provided the clearest evidence yet with a masterful outing Friday afternoon that he just might evolve into the sort of dominant homegrown starting pitcher the Royals have long desired. Duffy worked six scoreless innings in outpitching long-time Royals nemesis Justin Verlander in a 2-1 victory on the first game of a day/night doubleheader at Comerica Park. “He’s...

Moustakas in a walking boot as precaution

Kansas City Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas left Monday’s game early with tightness in his left calf and hasn’t played since. This morning he was seen walking around with a boot but the team has said that was just a precaution to relieve pressure. I’m kind of skeptical about that as Ned Yost has said Moustakas won’t play till this weekend and even that’s just a possibility...

Which Royals team will show up against Detroit?

It was a matter of time before the Kansas City Royals would lose a series after the All-Star break. And I’m not surprised it was against the lowly Miami Marlins. That’s the way baseball works. But even a team like the Marlins win games if their opponents can’t score runs, commit costly errors or give up key hits. Losing the series to the Marlins hasn’t finished the Royals...

Royals can show they're real deal vs. Tigers in Motown showdown

If the Kansas City Royals are indeed a playoff contender in the American League, their five-game series against the Detroit Tigers beginning Thursday night provides an excellent opportunity to show they're the real deal. Both the Royals and Tigers have been among the hottest teams in MLB since the All-Star break. Kansas City is 19-6 in the second half of this season, with...

Iglesias bunt vs. Danny Duffy is painful experience

by John Viril— Detroit Tigers SS Jose Iglesias attempted a bunt leading off the 3rd inning in the first game of a double-header against Kansas City on Friday. Instead, the pitch from Royals pitcher Danny Duffy—recalled from AAA as KC’s 26th man for the double-header—smacked Iglesias right where he should have been wearing a jock. video from guyism.com   Ouch! The Emilio Bonifacio Experiment Comes To An End In Toronto

The Toronto Blue Jays have dealt one of their biggest disappointments in a season full of disappointments. The Jays announced they have dealt Emilio Bonifacio to the Kansas City Royals for a player to be named later or cash considerations. Bonifacio was obtained from the Miami Marlins in the blockbuster trade that shocked the offseason and at the time was thought to be the sleeper...

Game 2013.123: Royals at Tigers

71-51, 1st place, still way ahead of Cleveland and Kansas City, whoever they think they are. I’ve just returned from the past, but I can’t tell you anything you don’t already know about the Tigers losing two in one day to the Royals. 2-1, 3-0. Yup. Royals-Tigers scores there, fer shur. The results were disappointing, but were the games bad? No, not really. I don’t know whether...
