KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Gavin Floyd pitched seven crisp innings, Alex Rios hit a tiebreaking homer in the seventh and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 3-2 on Tuesday night for their fifth consecutive win. Alejandro De Aza and Gordon Beckham also went deep for AL Central-leading Chicago, which maintained a three-game advantage over Detroit and improved to 6-10 against the Royals. Chicago had lost seven of eight against Kansas City. Floyd (10-10), who was making his second start since coming off the disabled with an elbow flexor strain, gave up two runs in the first inning and nothing after that. He allowed five hits, walked one and struck out three, throwing 52 strikes in 78 pitches. Floyd reached double-figures in victories for the fifth consecutive season. De Aza drove Luke Hochevar's second pitch over the wall in right for his eighth homer of the season. Hochevar (8-14), who is 1-5 in his last nine starts, allowed just one single the next four innings be...

M’s Travel Most, White Sox Travel Least Among AL Teams in 2013

The 2013 MLB schedule was released last week. On Thursday, my colleague Alex Remington addressed several issues raised by the schedule, most notably how season-long interleague play may affect how American League teams use their designated hitter. Alex also touched on the unbalanced schedule issue; that is, that teams within each division will play each other 19 times, thus resulting...

White Sox-Royals Preview

The Chicago White Sox took command of the AL Central by winning a makeup game over their closest challenger in their final meeting of the season. They know the race is far from over, however, especially with a series looming against a team that regularly gives them trouble. The White Sox hope to carry some momentum from an emotional win to Tuesday night's opener against a Kansas...

Error paves way as Tigers fall to White Sox

CHICAGO (AP) -- Omar Infante's throwing error on a potential double play helped Chicago scored two runs in the fifth inning Monday and the White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 5-4 in a pivotal makeup game. Chicago increased its lead in the AL Central to three games. Nate Jones (8-0) pitched 2 2-3 innings of one-hit relief and the White Sox won their fourth straight. The game...

Hispanic Heritage in KC: All-Time Hispanic Team

In a by-gone era, there was a bit of a perception from the outside looking in that the Kansas City Royals were a franchise opposed to minorities. Black pitchers were essentially unheard of in Kansas City. But John Mayberry, Hal McRae, Frank White and Amos Otis, prominent black position players in the 1970s, more than made up for it. Hispanics, on the other hand, played almost no...

Tigers on the brink, fall to White Sox 5-4

The Chicago White Sox (80-66) topped the Detroit Tigers (77-69) with a final score of 5-4 in a pivotal makeup game, forcing the Tigers back three games in the American League Central Division. A missed double play in the fifth inning would be the difference maker, allowing the White Sox to capitalize and score the tie-breaking run. Detroit’s Doug Fister (9-9) pitched four innings...

Royals 3, White Sox 0

Bruce Chen pitched into the seventh inning, Alex Gordon hit a two-run double and the Kansas City Royals beat the AL Central-leading White Sox 3-0 on Wednesday night to snap Chicago's five-game winning streak. Billy Butler hit a sacrifice fly in the third inning, but that was it until Gordon connected off Chris Sale (17-7) with two outs in the seventh. Left fielder Dayan Viciedo...

Jeremy Guthrie’s strange day

by John Viril— Jeremy Guthrie’s September 15 start against the Los Angeles Angels was one of the oddest performances of his career. Guthrie, an extreme fly-ball pitcher throughout his career, completely changed his stripes for that one day. Instead of inducing fly balls, Guthrie became an extreme ground ball pitcher. Of 27 balls in play on this most odd of days, 18 were ground...

Royals have White Sox's number

The Kansas City Royals will not win the American League Central this year. They won't even come close. However, Kansas City will have a major say on whether the Detroit Tigers or Chicago White Sox win the division. The Royals wrap up a three-game series Wednesday against the White Sox. They have seven games left with the Tigers, including the final three games of the season...

AL Comeback Player of the Year Race: Adam Dunn vs. Alex Rios

Going into this season, I often said the Sox’ success would hinge on how Jake Peavy, Alex Rios, and Adam Dunn perform, labeling them “the comeback kids” after they’d recently struggled with terrible performance and/or serious injuries. Adam Dunn (Photo by Keith Allison via CC BY-SA 2.0) About six months later and here we are – the White Sox are in first place in the...

Tigers throw away a second consecutive game

Have the Detroit Tigers literally thrown their playoff chances away? For the second consecutive day, Detroit's inability to complete a seeming routine double play played a key role in a loss. Two "not quite" midgame turns Sunday contributed to Detroit eventually losing 7-6 to the Indians in Cleveland. On Monday, an excellent takeout slide at second by the Chicago...
