The Royals have until 11 tonight to decide whether to add minor-league players to their 40-man roster to prevent the risk of losing them next month in the Rule 5 draft at the winter meetings in Dallas. Players generally are eligible for the draft if not placed on the 40-man roster after their fourth or fifth pro season -- five years for those younger than 19 when they sign their first contract; four years for those 19 and older.

The Royals added left-handed pitcher Ryan Verdugo, whom they acquired earlier this month, to their 40-man roster Friday before the 11 p.m. deadline. The move protects Verdugo from selection in the Rule 5 draft, which is Dec. 8 at the winter meetings in Dallas, and leaves the Royals with one available spot on their 40-man roster.
