Salvador Perez had knee surgery in spring training, and it kept him out of the Kansas City Royals' lineup until June 22. That left a big void in the middle of the batting order and behind the plate. Perez was a major reason the Royals routed the Minnesota Twins 9-1 Tuesday night. He went 2-for-4, drove in a run and scored a run in extending his hitting streak to a career-high 15 games, which is also the longest hitting streak by a Royal this year. He also threw out two baserunners attempting to steal. The Twins had swiped 16 bases in their previous 11 games, but Perez shut down their running game. He threw out Jamey Carroll and Darin Mastroianni in the first and fifth innings, respectively, to eradicate potential threats. Since July 2, opponents have attempted to steal only 21 bases when Perez has been behind the plate, and he has thrown out 11 of them. He also leads all catchers with a .317 batting average, 71 hits, 33 runs and 15 doubles since he came off the dis...

Q&A: Ned Yost, Lineup Construction in KC

When Ned Yost fills out his lineup card, he sees a future that is more promising than the present. His Kansas City Royals are near the bottom of the American League in runs scored, but five of the nine starters are 25 or younger, and none is older than 28. Several have all-star potential. The former Milwaukee Brewers manager — now in his third year at the helm in KC — has more...

Hochevar snaps seven-start winless skid

Kansas City Royals right-hander Luke Hochevar beat the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday for his first victory since July 31. To say he earned it would be a stretch. To say he pitched well would be an exaggeration. However, the Kansas City offense would not let Hochevar lose this one, pounding out 14 hits in a 10-5 victory over the Twins and taking advantage of Ryan Doumit's three...

First Inning Chess Match in Minnesota: Ironic?

Of all the big Tuesday night games, perhaps none was bigger than the barn burner in Minnesota between the Twins and the Royals. The Twins failed in their quest for that elusive 60th win, and the Royals solidified their grip on third place in this 9-1 thriller. Some might say the game was not compelling, but I found at least two things that drew my attention in the first inning alone...
