After spending his first night as a major-leaguer in the bullpen, left-hander Will Smith make a spot start for the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday in the series finale at Yankee Stadium. Smith was promoted from Class AAA Omaha, where he was 1-3 with a 4.01 ERA in nine starts. He had allowed 65 hits and 13 walks while striking out 37 in 51 2/3 innings. "We want to see what Will Smith can do," manager Ned Yost said. "His numbers aren't like eye-popping, but he's been throwing better. He developed a slider last year, and he's starting to put it all together. He's got a lot of maturity and composure." Smith wasn't needed in long relief Tuesday in the Royals' 3-2 loss to the Yankees, so he will start against New York in place of right-hander Luis Mendoza. In his final two Pacific Coast League starts, Smith gave up three earned runs and 14 hits in 14 2/3 innings, striking out seven and walking one. Smith was 13-9 with a 3.85 ERA last s...

Yankees give Royals rookie Smith a rude welcome to majors

Left-hander Will Smith was a pedestrian 1-3 with a 4.01 ERA in nine starts for Class AAA Omaha this season before the Kansas City Royals purchased his contract Tuesday. On Wednesday, the Royals thrust him into the rotation on baseball's biggest stage -- Yankee Stadium -- against a star-studded, veteran lineup. Smith, 22, was not quite ready for his Broadway debut, giving...

Will Smith gets a Royal welcome at Yankee Stadium

Will Smith, one of the Royals pitching prospects, didn’t show his potential in Wednesday night’s 8-3 loss to the New York Yankees. Smith pitched three and a third innings, giving up six hits and five runs, all earned, with three of the runs home runs. He struck out one and walked one. Smith left the game with a glittering 13.50 ERA and got the loss. After Smith faced 16 batters...

Moore stands firm on advancing prospects

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - With the loss of top pitching prospect Danny Duffy to elbow surgery, the temptation, of course, is for the Royals to rush another prospect into the major-league mix. After all, the Royals' youth movement is alive and well in terms of position players, and that young talent gives Royals fans hope of a bright future. But without Duffy, there is no youth movement...

Salvador Perez Is Coming Back

While throwing to rookie Salvador Perez in the second half of 2011, Kansas City Royals pitcher Luke Hochevar had his most consistent run of success in his career. Luke Hochevar has been an enigma for most of his career. Early on, he was mostly bad with a few starts here and there that showed the ability that the Royals saw when they drafted him 1st overall in the 2006 amateur draft...

Colon drawing comparisons to Jeter

Now, this is the Christian Colon the Royals envisioned when they drafted him with the fourth overall pick of the 2010 draft. After a slow start, Colon has heated up in the month of May and raised his average to .312 with a .370 on-base percentage for the Class AA Northwest Arkansas Naturals. Colon has three homers, 15 RBIs and eight stolen bases. That's a significant improvement...

Royals' Yost hopes to get another long reliever soon

Felipe Paulino made sure the Royals did not need a long reliever Monday night by throwing 6 2/3 scoreless innings in Kansas City's 6-0 victory over the New York Yankees. Manager Ned Yost had to use only Tim Collins for 1 1/3 innings and Aaron Crow for one inning to close out the shutout. However, Yost knows that won't be the case every night. Many games, the Royals starters...

Felipe Paulino: Extension Canidate?

Call me crazy, but I think the time has come for the Royals to extend Felipe Paulino. Paulino is Super 2 arbitration eligible in 2013 and won't be a free agent until 2015 at the earliest. I think a deal extending him two years with a club option or two might be doable by both sides. A salary breakdown might look like this:2012 - 1.9 Million2013 - 3.1 Million2014 - 4.5 Million2015...

A-Rod, Yankees get best of rookie Smith

NEW YORK (AP) -- Alex Rodriguez gave Will Smith a rude welcome to the major leagues Wednesday night, hitting two homers off the rookie to back another strong start for Andy Pettitte and lead the New York Yankees over the Kansas City Royals 8-3. A-Rod snapped a 52 at-bat homereless drought and drove in three runs for New York. Curtis Granderson also connected off Smith and the Yankees...

Paulino, Moustakas lead Royals over Yankees

NEW YORK (AP) -- Felipe Paulino blanked New York for the second time in a month, and Mike Moustakas and Jeff Francoeur hit two-run homers to lead the Kansas City Royals over the reeling Yankees 6-0 on Monday night. New York's bats fizzled once again, going 0 for 13 with runners in scoring position with five strikeouts and a foulout. Booed repeatedly by their increasingly impatient...

Not-So-Rapid Reaction: Yankees 8, Royals 3

Don’t you just love it when stories that take weeks to write need but a few hours to be dismantled? After weeks of single after single, many (including myself) were discussing the transformation of Alex Rodriguez from slugger to virtual slap-hitter. Coming into the game, his OBP was an impressive .369, but his .404 slugging percentage left much to be desired. So, with rookie Will...
