The Yankees won the bidding for Japanese infielder Hiroyuki Nakajima last month with a $2 million bid and now have until 5 p.m. Friday to reach an agreement with him and have him pass a physical or he will head back to Japan.
Unfortunately it doesn’t look like the chances of that happening are to good. Marc Carig spoke with a “person with knowledge” of the situation says it’s unlikely that they would be able to do both by Friday.
We haven’t heard a lot of what Nakajima’s contract demands are, but Carig reports that the Yankees see him as a backup and are determined to pay him as such.
If the two sides can’t come to an agreement, the Yankees will likely turn their attention toward Eric Chavez, according to Jon Heyman.
