Dempster
On the day that the Red Sox introduced Shane Victorino to the media, they agreed to a two-year 26.5 million dollar deal with Ryan Dempster. The Red Sox have been busy this season in free agency, but all their signings have been sub par. Mike Napoli probably is the most intriguing of all the signings thus far, and they have been procrastinating on this signing, like many in the past, due to some unknown hip or back injury that is now coming to everyone's attention. Either way, what are the Red Sox doing? I understand Dempster has pitched over 200 innings in the four season previous to 2012, but this guy is on the back end of his career at 35 and was on the DL on two separate occasions last year. Who is to say he is going to be able to stay healthy this year. I also am not very optimistic about how he will pitch against the competition in the AL East which is one of the strongest divisions in baseball. He had a 5.09 ERA in his short time with the Texas Rangers last year while he battled injuries. He did win five straight late in the season and ended up finishing his stint with Texas better than it had started, but I am still not sold that he will be successful in the AL East. With a two year deal though, I am happy we did not overpay in years as well as dollars for an aging pitcher. As of now I am not at all remotely happy or even a little bit excited for any of the players we have signed. If we can somehow swing a trade for Ellsbury for top pitching prospects or a true number 1 pitcher, then we may be able to consider this offseason successful. But as of now, ownership has not given me any reason to change my negative view on them after the complete joke of a season that we all had to suffer through.

Ryan Dempster, Quality AL Pitcher

According to Ken Rosenthal, Ryan Dempster is close to signing with the Boston Red Sox. Assuming the deal gets done, you’re going to hear a lot about how Dempster is an NL pitcher transitioning to the AL East, and how this is bound to go poorly. You’re going to hear about Dempster’s 5.09 ERA with Texas after the mid-season trade ended his long stint as an NL only pitcher,...
