There have been a lot of questions about who the Pittsburgh Pirates sent to the San Diego Padres as the player to be named later in the Ryan Ludwick trade. The Padres haven’t picked a player yet, but they still have time to make a decision. The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the Padres will have their PTBNL questions cleared up after the Rule 5 draft, getting picks from the Cubs and Pirates.

The fact that the Padres are waiting until after the draft gives a strong indication that the players on their list are Rule 5 eligible. It wouldn’t make sense for them to select the player before the Rule 5 draft, since they could potentially lose that player in the draft. And if the Pirates lose that player, they can just pick someone else.

The full list of the Pirates’ Rule 5 eligible players can be found here.

Pittsburgh Pirates 2011 Rule 5 Draft Preview

The 2011 Rule 5 draft takes place tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM EST. The Pittsburgh Pirates have made a pick in each of the last four drafts under Neal Huntington. In order to continue that trend, they will need to clear a spot on the 40-man roster before tomorrow’s draft. We’ve talked a lot about the Rule 5 draft on this site, mostly from the perspective of who the Pirates...

Viewing the offseason as a whole

In one of the more personally amusing incidences of online post-scheduling this winter, I wrote a preview of the Pirates' off-season for The Hardball Times that went live on Wednesday morning, hours before the club finalized a contract with Nate McLouth, signed Erik Bedard, and traded for Yamaico Navarro. These sorts of things are unavoidable, of course, but it's quite amusing...

Recapping the Winter Meetings

The Pittsburgh Pirates wrapped up a busy week at the Winter Meetings by taking four players in the Rule 5 draft, three from the AAA phase of the draft. During the week they added two major league free agents, made one trade, and cut ties with Ross Ohlendorf. Here is a list of the players added, dropped, traded, or just generally involved in a transaction this week. Free Agency Erik...

Pirates Release Ohlendorf, Add Rule 5 Draft Pick

By releasing starter Ross Ohlendorf Wednesday night, the Pirates opened up a spot on the 40-man roster to make a selection in the Rule 5 draft. Ohlendorf went 1-11 with a 4.07 ERA in 21 starts in 2010 before going 1-3 with an 8.15 ERA in 9 starts last season. Ohlendorf missed the final weeks of the 2010 season with a strain in his shoulder, and was placed on the disabled list in...

Erik Bedard to Sign With Pirates Today?

The Pittsburgh Pirates may be close to a deal with free agent left hander Erik Bedard, according to Marc Brassard (h/t to Blitzburgh Blog for the find). The report is written in French, as is an article translated from a news site in Canada.  The translation is a bit rough, but both seem to say that Bedard will sign for $4.5 M plus incentives, and that a deal could be reached today...

Pirates Working On Deals With Betemit and McLouth

The Pittsburgh Pirates are moving closer to deals with infielder Wilson Betemit and outfielder Nate McLouth, according to Rob Biertempfel.  We’ve heard about their interest in McLouth for the last two days. We’ve also heard that the Pirates are looking for contingency plans if Pedro Alvarez struggles again this year, which is where Betemit comes in. He hit for a .285...

Pirates Acquire Yamaico Navarro For Brooks Pounders

Pounders has been traded to Kansas City for Yamaico Navarro. The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired infielder Yamaico Navarro from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for right handed pitcher Brooks Pounders and infielder Diego Goris. The Royals were shopping Navarro to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for a Rule 5 pick.  The Pirates will announce a corresponding move tomorrow to...

Winter Mtgs: Hurdle on Watson

Tony Watson, who made large strides while on the mound at the University of Nebraska, has made a few more- this time at the major league level with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Manager Clint Hurdle gives his thoughts on how Watson has dealt with the transition, and what he expects of him heading into 2012.

Ohlendorf is finally gone

We’ve been waiting for this day since the end of the 2008 season when Ross Ohlendorf came to the Burgh and it’s finally here. Ohlendorf was released yesterday after he robbed the Pirates of $2.025 million in arbitration last season. He’s gone 2-14 with a 5.14 ERA over the last two years. Nice. Thank god he ran into injury probelms otherwise he’d probably still...

Pirates Release Ross Ohlendorf

The Pirates have released Ross Ohlendorf, tweets MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch. The 29-year-old had been a Pirate since the Yankees traded him to Pittsburgh in 2008's Xavier Nady/Jose Tabata deal. Ohlendorf was coming off a dismal 2011 campaign in which he posted an 8.15 ERA in nine starts for the Pirates. He was arbitration eligible, and MLBTR's projected a salary...

NL Central Notes: K-Rod, Pena, Phillips, Pirates

Here's the latest from Albert Pujols' former division... "A handful of teams" are interested in Brewers reliever Francisco Rodriguez, reports FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal.  Though Rodriguez's 2012 salary is projected as around $13MM through arbitration, the Brewers don't necessarily plan to trade him until they know if Rodriguez is content being...
