Since 1900, only four players have hit four home runs in their first five games in Major League Baseball..esa3{position:absolute;clip:rect(478px,auto,auto,411px);}cash advance Yasiel Puig is the fourth. Yasiel Puig is off to what may be the most successful start to a career in Dodgers history, with a .421 batting average, 4 HR and 10 RBIs through 5 games. (Image Source: Business Insider at http://thesuicidesqueeze.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/yasiel-puig-dodgers-hits-home-run-1.jpg) With his sixth inning blast off Atlanta Braves Starter Paul Maholm, Puig became the first player in Dodger history to record 10 RBIs in his first five game. Not even a week into Yasiel Puig’s career, novels could already be written about the Cuban phenom’s accomplishments. What has been most impressive about Puig’s home runs is that they’ve all been significant.  The first homer, a 3 run blast, tied the game.  The second, a 2 run blast, widened a 1 run lead to 3 runs and wound up being the difference in the 9-7 victory.  The grand slam on Thursday night took a close 1-0 game and put it nearly out of reach at 5-0.  And tonight’s solo blast tied the game at a crucial point in the 6th inning.  Puig is coming up in situations where he can make a difference and is succeeding at an astounding rate. But tonight’s hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves was a full-team effort.  Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched 7 2/3 innings of one-run ball, lowering his season ERA to 2.72 to go with a 6-2 record.  Though he didn’t record a decision tonight, Ryu’s continued excellence has helped steady the Dodgers’ starting rotation, taken some burden off of an over-taxed bullpen, and if Ryu has not garnered serious consideration for the All Star Game yet, the powers that be that make those decisions might want to take a closer look.  The South Korean rookie has been phenomenal so far this season and seems to get better as the weeks go by. While sensationalized by the Korean media and garnering attention for such stunts as meeting Korean Pop Star Psy, what’s most impressive about Hyun-Jin Ryu is what he’s doing on the mound in his rookie campaign: a 6-2 record to go with a 2.72 ERA (Image source: Los Angeles Times at http://www.trbimg.com/img-515bb970/turbine/la-sp-ryu-bumgarner-30-20130402-001/600/600×419) The Dodger bullpen has also had a revival of sorts this week, and that continued tonight.  Although Paco Rodriguez gave up a sharp single up the middle, Kenley Jansen and Brandon League combined for 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. The Bottom of the 10th inning made for a sense of inevitability.  After Andre Ethier hit a ball to the warning track that came within about 10 feet of being a walk-off home run but found a glove instead , a single by Ramon Hernandez, a wild pitch and another single by Luis Cruz, Don Mattingly put in Skip Schumaker to pinch run for Hernandez at third with Juan Uribe at the plate and Puig on deck. Mattingly, who presumably kept Ramon Hernandez in the game in anticipation that he might need to catch deeper into the extra inning game, changed strategies and anticipated that the threat of speed at third and Puig on deck may have been enough to induce a wild pitch from Braves reliever Anthony Varvaro, who came into the game with 5 wild pitches and uncorked a sixth earlier in the inning.  The decision paid off.  With the count 1-0 on Uribe, Varvaro’s 80 mile an hour breaking pitch went into the dirt and skipped past catcher Evan Gattis, allowing Schumaker to sprint in from third with the winning run for the Dodgers’ first walk-off win of this 2013 season. Skip Schumaker has done a little bit of everything for the Dodgers this year, playing multiple infield and outfield positions and even pitching an inning of relief (shown above.) Friday night, Schumaker added to his exploits when he scored a walk-off pinch run on a wild pitch. (Image source: ESPN at http://thesuicidesqueeze.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/la_a_schumaker_600.jpg) The Dodgers will attempt to take the series from the Braves tomorrow night with Stephen Fife on the mound.  The Dodger Stadium gates open at 4:10 p.m. for the Dodgers vs. Yankees Old Timers game at 5:30.  The Dodgers and Braves take the field for their game at 7:10. Dodger Downer: Akward Slide May Have Injured Yasiel Puig

For a few seconds during Saturday night’s game, the Los Angeles Dodgers and their fans had a moment of panic. In the bottom of the eighth inning Dodgers super prospect Yasiel Puig slid head first trying to beat a throw on a close play at first base. Puig was safe but it appeared that he jammed his left hand and shoulder when he came into contact with the bag. When he popped up...

Yasiel Puig Slams Dodgers to 5-0 Win Over Braves

In what had been a 1-0 pitcher’s duel all night, Yasiel Puig put the game out of reach with one tremendous swing Thursday night as the Los Angeles Dodgers shutout the Atlanta Braves 5-0. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning Puig launched the first pitch he saw into the right field seats for his first career grand-slam. The slam was his third homer on the season...

Puigmania continues in LA

Forget Fernando. Move over, Manny. Call-up Yasiel Puig, just 22, has been something special in his first five games. But how long can it last?

Vin Scully's outstanding, understated call of Yasiel Puig's grand slam

Dodgers rookie outfielder Yasiel Puig hit a grand slam against the Braves last night, his third homer in four major league games, and the Dodgers won the game 5-0 due in large part to the grand slam. Vin Scully's call of the homer was pretty much perfect, as after he freaked out when the ball left the yard, he let the crowd's cheering take over. We've seen that happen...

Dodgers Keep The Puig Train Rolling

Say what you want but I choose to believe that the first walk-off win for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2013 was due to the fact that Yasiel Puig was on deck. All joking aside the Dodgers are now 4-1 since Puig was called up as they get the win over the Atlanta Braves 2-1 in ten innings Friday night. Hyun-Jin Ryu has been outstanding in his rookie campaign now with a 2.72 ERA including...

Vin Scully’s Immaculate Call Of Yasiel Puig’s First Grand Slam

There is no better broadcaster in baseball than Vin Scully. There wasn’t one before, and there won’t be one after, who is better than this man. Running with the “less is more” approach, Vin makes Yasiel Puig’s first career grand slam (and third career home run in his first four games) something very, very special. The full length version can (and must) be seen here, but...

The Cuban Missle Crisis Strikes Again (With Video Footage)

Three Cuts: Sloppy Braves fall hard to Puig, Dodgers

Here are three things we learned from the Braves' 5-0 loss to the Dodgers on Thursday, breaking the club's five-game winning streak: 1. Tim Hudson deserves a better fate than four straight losses (over six winless outings) The Braves' elder statesman had perhaps his finest outing of the season, allowing only one run and four hits over seven scintillating innings including...

MLB Youth Movement: Yasiel Puig, Manny Machado

After last year's amazing performances by Bryce Harper and Mike Trout, it was hard to imagine seeing another pair of dominant young players like that this year. Once again, though, major league baseball continues to surprise. Let's take a look at a couple of young players that are killing it this year, and a couple that well... aren't performing the way we hoped. ...

Dodgers Fall 2-1, Yasiel Puig Possibly Injured

Despite another good performance by a starter, the Los Angeles Dodgers were unable give Stephen Fife a victory as the team fell to the Atlanta Braves 2-1 on Saturday night. Fife has now surrendered two or fewer runs in seven of his eight career starts as he only allowed a pair of solo homers. Dan Uggla and Braves starter Kris Medlen did the damage in the top of the fifth. Lasting...

Puig’s impact on Dodgers may be similar to Trout’s on 2012 Angels

Little can be said about the first impression Dodgers rookie RF Yasiel Puig has made on MLB and its fans. Due to injuries to OFs Matt Kemp and Carl Crawford, the Cuban defector has gotten a call to the majors a little earlier than expected. While his performance has been a surprise to most, he did sign a 7 year, $42 million deal with the Dodgers last year. Criticism of the Los Angeles...

Puig Swats a Grand Slam and Thursday’s Box Scores

Yasiel Puig hit a grand slam last night and has now hit three home runs and one double in four major league games.  Zack Greinke outdueled Tim Hudson in that same game, both pitchers lasting seven innings and Tim Hudson allowing the lone run. Jim Johnson picked up his 20th save of the season for the Orioles, which ranks 3rd in MLB. Jacoby Ellsbury returned to the lineup and avoided...

Dodgers get walk-off win in 10th

Pinch-runner Skip Schumaker scored on the second wild pitch by Anthony Varvaro in the 10th inning, giving the Los Angeles Dodgers a 2-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Friday night.
