Found April 12, 2012 on Bronx Baseball Daily:
PLAYERS: CC Sabathia
TEAMS: New York Yankees

After CC Sabathia bombed in his first start of the year on Opening Day, I went back and took a look at his career numbers on that day and they weren’t pretty. However, they were very strong in his second start so it is safe to say that last night’s poor performance was a little unexpected from Sabathia.

It wasn’t a straight out bad start though. Sabathia actually had a strong 1st, 4th, and 6th innings where he not only retired the Orioles in order, but did it efficiently. The 2nd, 3rd, and 5th innings were the ones where he really struggled. He gave up a pair of runs in the 2nd and 5th innings and things could have been even worse if not for a wide strike zone.

Still, it was an improvement over his first start and considering the fact that Sabathia typically struggles a little bit more in April it’s a good sign. Sabathia also thought he improved.

“I was just trying to be too fine with my fastball,” Sabathia told Mark Feinsand of the NY Daily News. “I had good command and my pitches were doing what they needed to, I was just trying to make too good a pitch. … My cutter was pretty good, I threw some changeups good late. I felt a lot better than I did in my first start.”

Hopefully Sabathia can settle into a groove soon because while there is no reason to be concerned of a prolonged slump, he is extremely important piece to this rotation. It’s hard to overstate his importance because without him at the head, the rotation questions behind him become much more stark.

He did look better in his first start, hopefully he can continue that trend his next time out.

The Yankee Beat: blown saves, Banuelos, and CC

The Yankees picked up a quick, easy win today as Hiroki Kuroda cruised through eight innings as they beat the Angels 5-0 at the home opener. Read our recap here. The Captain’s Blog asks is this is the year of the blown save? Maybe, but just not in the Bronx. It’s About the Money thinks that the Yankees have been too aggressive promoting Manny Banuelos. Kuroda Worried About His Stadium Opening Start

From Andrew Marchand:Hiroki Kuroda has never played in Yankee Stadium. So when he throws the first home pitch for the Yankees a little after 1 p.m. on Friday, he will have more nerves than anything else. "Rather than being excited, I'm more worried about how I'm going to perform," Kuroda said through his interpreter. ... "Since I've never pitched...

Pineda continues throwing, waits to get into a game

Michael Pineda spent some time playing catch under the watch of Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild, who helped him with a few things mechanically, last week. This week he has been doing long tossing program. There is no word on when he’ll get back on the mound, but that seems like the next step that everyone is waiting for. The first step to getting on a mound would be...

Defensive shortcomings hurt Yankees rotating DH plan

I strongly disliked the Jesus Montero-Michael Pineda for many reasons.  Pineda’s weak second half in 2011 scared me.  Shipping away a 22-year-old hitter who was tailor made for Yankee Stadium angered me.  Trading a near sure-thing for a question mark with potential made me feel that Brian Cashman’s legacy now depends on the success or failure of this move.  But in between...

New York Yankees Fragrance Review, Pt 2: For Him

As I mentioned in my previous post, the Yankees will be unveilling their new fragrances at today's home opener at the Stadium. I loved New York Yankees For, the women's fragrance, but I also wanted to write about the men's fragrance, simply called New York Yankees. The fragrance's description reads "New York Yankees Fragrance epitomizes the winning style of...

Young Yankee fan dances in blue bodysuit at Camden Yards (Video)

A young New York Yankees fan dressed in a blue bodysuit was seen dancing it up Tuesday night in the stands of Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore. Your browser does not support iframes. The young fan went home happy that night as the Yankees won the game 5-4. However, the game went 12 innings, so hopefully the game didn't end too far past his bedtime. Video via...

Bisons Power Past Yankees In Blowout Fashion

Buffalo, NY – It was a record breaking day for the Bisons in their home opener as they dominated the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees 12-3 in front of an announced 10,905 fans at Coca-Cola Field. The 12 runs broke the Bisons previous record for runs in a home opener, a 10 run outing in a win over Pawtucket in 2003. While the bulk of the runs came in the fourth inning, the Buffalo...

Is David Robertson the most dominate reliever in the league right now?

I know that the season is just beginning, and that players are just beginning to get the feel for the game again, but what I saw from David Robertson yesterday definitely blew my mind. Even though he only pitched one inning and struck only one hitter and walked one, I could see how every hitter looked helpless when facing him. His pitch location was perfect and his fastball was...

Forget Retirement, What if Mariano Struggles?

I’ve decided that I have been spoiled. Not by material goods but by the Yankees. Through numerous accolades and world championships, nothing has been more impressive than seeing one of the greatest pitchers of all time, Mariano Rivera. I don’t think there is anything Mariano Rivera can’t do? Think on it and let me know if there is something, within reason, he has yet to accomplish...

Yankees Switch Lineup, Gear Up for Pujols and Angels

This afternoon at Yankee Stadium, the New York Yankees host the Los Angeles Angels in their 2012 home opener. In order to improve offensive production, manager Joe Girardi has swapped Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano in the lineup, inserting Cano into the cleanup spot and moving Rodriguez to the 3-hole. Both Rodriguez and Cano are without a home run or RBI through six games this...

Yankees Pitcher Freddy Garcia Better Be Scared of Andy Pettitte Taking His Spot After Wild Night in Baltimore

In the movie Major League, Ricky Vaughn (played by none other than Charlie Sheen), came out to the song Wild Thing by The Troggs. That was partly due to his personality, but also because Ricky had a little trouble throwing strikes. in Major League Baseball, Mitch Williams took that role, and adopted the same song for similar reasons. After last night’s poor performance...

Russell Martin and Kurt Suzuki Are Two of The Most Underrated Catchers in Baseball.

The price remained well under what I would...
