Most of my posts are about guys the Giants do sign, but this one’s to let you know about a player the team says it won’t go after.

According to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, outfielder Yoenis Cespedes will not be putting on the orange and black anytime soon.

The Giants had previously been rumored to possibly be in on Cespedes, who defected from Cuba a month ago.

MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro says the Miami Marlins are willing to fork out a six-year contract for the five-tool player, who Baseball America’s Jim Callis called a Top 15 prospect.

However, Giants general manager Brian Sabean doesn’t think the 27-year-old is worth it, saying, “The price tag is probably beyond what his talent is.”

This coming from the man who signed Barry Zito to a seven-year, $126 million-dollar contract in 2007; Aaron Rowand to a five-year, $60 million-dollar deal that still has a year left on it (even though Rowand is no longer with the team); and relievers Jeremy Affeldt and Javier Lopez to a combined $9.25 million dollars in December.

Translation: If the free-wheeling Sabean thinks Cespedes isn’t worth the big bucks, then this dude must really stink.

Another person who’s not drinking the Cespedes Kool-Aid is Marlins outfielder Logan Morrison, who had this to say about Cespedes (in response to an over-the-top YouTube video that features Cespedes performing baseball tricks):

…you don’t need to catch balls behind your back in games, and you don’t need to jump 100 feet in the air and leg press 20,000 pounds, or whatever the heck he’s doing. It’s all about playing the game the right way and applying your skills to the game.

It will be interesting to see what happens down the road.

Not only are Morrison’s Marlins reportedly interested in Cespedes, so are the Cubs, White Sox, Orioles, and Tigers. (Maybe they’d also be interested in a trade for Zito?)

I hope you enjoyed reading "Sabean, on Yoenis Cespedes: “Price tag is beyond what his talent is”." I'm interested in your opinion on this article. Why not leave a comment at 22gigantes.com?
