Sabermetric Spotlight: Johnny Cueto, SP, Cincinnati Reds The Reason - I never would have guessed that a Cincinnati Reds pitcher would be having a CY Young caliber year. This is mainly due to playing at Great American Ballpark, a band box of sorts. I always try and avoid any pitchers who are throwing here and love picking up players who hit there. So to have Johnny perform this well, it’s something I would have never predicted. Now he is getting lots of plugs in CY Young talk, so lets see why!   Basic Numbers - Lets look at the past five years at once, cool?   Hello consistent improvement. His ERA, and WHIP all improved steadily from 2008 to 2011. This year has been, at least statistically, a step back from 2011. However this year Cueto has 17 wins and will cross 200 IP for the first time in his career, two factors that will definitely play a part of the CY Young raace. Sabermetrics - The past two years have been stellar for Johnny. The only difference between the two are the incr...

Getting personal with Todd Frazier

Last Game The Reds kicked some Diamondback butt yesterday afternoon, sweeping the three-game series. They’re the first team to reach 80 wins, and the Nationals and the Rangers, who are tied for the second-most wins in baseball, only have 77. Mat Latos bounced back nicely, allowing 2 hits and striking out 7 in 7.0 innings of work. And the home run bats suddenly woke up, too. Three...

Reds will see fresh faces with September call-ups

Now we know who the Reds will call up to fill out the expanded September rosters. As of now there will be seven players who will get the call. Some of them are familiar names to Cincinnati fans, while others will be making their debuts for the Redlegs. The Big "O" Logan Ondrusek will be coming back on September 1. You'll remember he was unlucky...

Fan creates Cincinnati Reds-themed corn maze

First off, how cool is this? What you behold here is the beautiful work of Bill Irons, a 44-year old married father of four and a devoted Reds fan, who turned his massive 12-acre corn patch into a Cincinnati Reds-themed maze. This marks the 13th consecutive year that the Lebanon, Ohio native has sculpted such a creative design into his patch of corn. Last year the theme was zoo...

On this date in Reds history

Both accounts are derived from Redleg Journal: September 1st, 1954 - In a pre-game stunt, Reds GM Gabe Paul offers $25 to each Reds and Giants catcher who would attempt to catch balls dropped 575 feet from an Army helicopter hovering high above Crosley Field. An additional $100 would be awarded to the willing participant for each ball caught. Only the Giants'...

Reds' Baker is sticking with Stubbs

Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker sounds willing to ride out a super funk by center fielder Drew Stubbs. "I hope he comes around soon because it's driving him crazy," Baker said. "You've got to tighten your belt and fight. That's what it's all about." After going 1-for-5 with four strikeouts in the Reds' 6-2 win over Arizona, Stubbs is...

Johnny Cueto For Cy Young

Yesterday, we rolled out Fielding Dependent Pitching in an effort to provide a more thorough evaluation of pitching and run prevention. Today, I want to talk about how FDP can be used to examine the Cy Young races, and specifically, why it illustrates that Johnny Cueto should be the frontrunner for the NL Cy Young Award. Let’s just start by looking at the value stats of the top...

Game 133: Reds 9, Astros 3

The Cincinnati Reds continued their winning ways in the first game against the Houston Astros last night, beating the bottom-dwelling team 9-3. Mike Leake started for the Reds and turned in a quality start, going 6 innings and allowing just 2 runs on 7 hits, 2 walks, and 6 strikeouts. His good outing netted him his 7th win on the season, giving him a slight chance at joining the...

Reds Are First to 80 Wins

Chris Heisey has been a valuable outfield reserve for the Reds since his arrival in 2010. Last night he homered twice as the Reds completed a sweep at Arizona and became the first team in MLB to reach 80 wins this season. Mat Latos turned in seven strong innings for his 11th win. Meanwhile the second place Cardinals lost at Pittsburgh to fall eight games behind.

Reds look to continue roll in Houston

Since the All-Star break, the NL Central-leading Cincinnati Reds have picked up three wins in Houston. The last-place Astros have just as many victories in their home ballpark over that same stretch. The Reds look to win their fourth in a row and continue to make things miserable for the Astros in Friday night's series opener. Cincinnati (80-52) arrives in Houston after capping...
