Pitching has been the name of the game for the Clippers as the second-half of their season has gotten off to a promising 4-3 start. They could easily be 7-0 as their losses came by three runs or less (two of them were by a one-run deficit). With a limited offense, the pitching staff is key and if they keep the runs down, Columbus has a shot of making a late-season push for the playoffs. That is a huge if however. The Clippers need to get back to .500 first and then work from there. As of right now, Columbus stands at 50-56, two games behind the Louisville Bats for second place in the International League West and 13.5 games behind the Indianapolis Indians for first. The Clippers kick-started the second portion of the season with a four-game series with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Right-hander Zach McAllister dominated in his rehab start for Cleveland in a 3-2 victory in game one. Daisuke Matsuzaka tossed another gem of an outing in a 7-2 win and the second game and the Clippers edge...

Josh Tomlin Makes Season Debut In Rehab Outing

It’s been quite a while since we saw Josh Tomlin on the mound. On Friday night, however, the right-hander made his season debut following Tommy John surgery less than one year ago. Per his own Twitter account as well as Tony Lastoria of IBI, Tomlin pitched a scoreless inning in the Arizona Fall League. Nice to see @jtomlin43 out on the hill tonight for the first time in a rehab...

Lindor-Mania takes over Canal Park in Aeros Win

Akron, OH – By the third time Francisco Lindor walked up to the plate Thursday night at Canal Park, the Akron faithful began to chant, "Fran-cis-co." The highly-touted Indians prospect put on a show and gave everyone a look into the type of hitter he can be, going 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and three runs batted in to lead the Aeros to a 5-1 win over the Richmond...

A three year Indians review: Shortstop

This is the third part in this series, and thus far the Indians have been strongly improved over two positions.  The first two positions I looked at were first base and second base, so it's time to continue across the diamond in counter-clockwise fashion and look at the shortstop position. This is the only position which has stayed consistent over the last few years for the...

Indians minor-league notebook: Akron Aeros

This week we jump down I-77 to Double-A Akron, where the Indians have some of the hottest prospects in their system. There are a lot of players in Akron that could be part of the Indians roster in the near future, or who could be used as trade bait. Just the Facts Akron (51-53) sits in fourth place in the Eastern Leagues Western Division, 5.5 games out of first place and 2.5 games...

Second Thoughts Game #101: Indians 10, Mariners 1

Pre-Game Commentary The Indians needed to win this game. They’ve started off the second half in disappointing fashion, losing four of their first five games. Worse yet, all of the losses were by one run and were more than winnable games. The team is lucky to only have fallen back one game on the Tigers, but they missed a good opportunity to gain some ground. They need to salvage...

Second Thoughts Game #100: Indians 3, Mariners 4

Return of the Mac The long-anticipated return of Zach McAllister to the Indians rotation is finally here and while his first start wasn’t all that great, we’ll still take it considering the circumstances. The right-hander pitched five innings allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits and had to work around miscues by his defense as well as his own rustiness...

The Cleveland Indians (53-48) return to Progressive Field tonight to take on the Texas Rangers (56-46). The Indians will be hosting another one of their dollar dog nights, with fireworks following the game. The Tribes offense is hoping to offer some of their own fireworks during the game. They are returning home after scoring 10 runs in their last game. The Indians will be sending...

Around The Farm: July 25, 2013

Around the Farm takes a quick look at some of yesterday’s performances by Indians prospects throughout the system. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday’s game.  Francisco Lindor (SS, Akron): 3-for-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 SO Well, it took 10 games, but Lindor finally struck out at the Double-A level. He added a double and home run last...

Indians 10 Mariners 1: Kazmir’s dominant run continues as offense awakens

We have been waiting for the offense to wake up and they finally did. The hot and cold streaks are no doubt frustrating. It is games like this one where the Wahoos scored 10 runs on 13 hits, where you scratch your head at how they can be so anemic at times. A day after a second straight blunder-filled one run loss, the angry Indians took their frustrations out on Mariners left-hander...

The Reinvention of Carlos Santana

Regular readers to Burning River Baseball know that I have always been bearish on Carlos Santana. Whether it was missing a week of games last season due to getting hit in the catcher's mask by a line drive or lazy attempts to block balls in the dirt, I have always felt as if he has not lived up to his "top prospect" status. This may be relying too much on subjective...

Minor League Baseball Team Holding Ridiculous ‘Sharknado Night’ Promotion

The Cleveland Indians’ Class-A affiliate, Lake Count Captains are jumping on the latest flop of a TV show and buzz-worthy on Twitter TV show’s bandwagon for a new promotion, and you can’t help but laugh. The team will be holding a Sharknado promotion on Aug. 15th and it will have everything if their ridiculous press release is any indication. (Eastlake, OH) – The Lake County...

WINSTON-SALEM - The Carolina Mudcats jumped out in front early and never looked back, defeating the Winston Salem Dash 7-2 Friday night.  The win continued Carolina’s season-high win streak to six games.  Carolina (19-14, 41-62) moved to a season-high five games over .500 for the second half. Indians left stunned again in Seattle, lose 4-3

SEATTLE—It was just last season that Tribe starter Zach McAllister led the league in unearned runs. Making his first start since June 2, the right-hander received no help defensively again Tuesday night. Three more errors and lack run support proved more than a recipe for disaster, as the Indians fell one run short to the Seattle Mariners for the second straight night, 4-3. Offensively...

Rangers' comeback falls short in extra-inning loss to Indians

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Ryan Raburn's three-run homer in the 11th inning off Jason Frasor gave the Cleveland Indians a wild and sloppy 11-8 win over the Texas Rangers on Friday night. After Asdrubal Cabrera and Carlos Santana singled off Frasor (0-2), Raburn pulled a 2-1 pitch onto the home-run porch in left to rescue the Indians, who blew a 7-1 lead and nearly lost to a Texas team...
