Jarrod Saltalamacchia continues to make a case for the Red Sox to bring back the soon-to-be free agent. On Friday night his seventh-inning grand slam broke open a tie game giving the Sox an 8-4 win over the Yankees at Fenway Park. It was his 13th home run of the season and third career grand slam the first since May 5 2009. Shane Victorino led off the seventh with a single to left ending the night for Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda who took the loss. Left-hander Cesar Cabral entered hitting David Ortiz the only batter he faced with a pitch. Claiborne walked pinch-hitter Jonny Gomes to load the bases before striking out Daniel Nava. But Saltalamacchia blasted his slam into the bleacher seats behind the Sox bullpen giving the Sox an 8-4 lead. The Sox jumped out to a four-run lead in the first when they sent eight batters to the plate. Dustin Pedroia again in the lead-off spot opened with a single to left taking third on David Ortiz’s one-out double. Mike Carp’s groundout scored...

Jarrod Saltalamacchia Says Jake Peavy ‘Threw the Ball Well’ in Loss to Rays (Video)

Thursday night’s outing was a bit of a rough one for Jake Peavy.  Peavy allowed just three runs in the game, but he struggled with his control, tying a season high with five walks over six innings. The game was tied when the right-hander departed, but Boston’s bullpen crumbled in the eighth, allowing the Rays to escape with a 4-3 win in the final meeting of the regular season...

Alfonso Soriano's leaping catch robs Manny Machado of home run

Alfonso Soriano makes a spectacular leaping catch over the left-field wall to take a home run away from the Orioles' Manny Machado in the eighth inning Thursday night at Camden Yards. The Yankees leftfielder gives a little salute to a grateful Dave Robertson on the mound after making the dramatic catch. Soriano's grab became even more important after the Yankees blew a...

Photo: Red Sox website boasts beard styles worn by own players

The Boston Red Sox are serious about their beards. So much so, in fact, that there is a template on their team website that features a chart distinguishing each player's beard apart from one another. No, seriously this is real. Among the more notable facial hair styles include "The Wolf" from catcher David Ross, "The Sure Thing" from pitcher John Lackey...

Peavy's Right Wrist Hit By Line Drive, Is "OK"

(AP Photo/Chris O'Meara)Like the loss wasn't bad enough, the Red Sox got a scare last night as Jake Peavy took a line drive off his right (throwing) wrist off the bat of Desmond Jennings. Peavy stayed in the game to finish off the inning, but did not come out for the seventh. X-Rays were negative and Peavy (typically) pooh-poohed the situation, "It’ll be OK. I’m...

RSL Poll: Drew vs Xander

The Guru Contributing Writer As the Boston Red Sox push towards the playoffs, manager John Farrell has some difficult decisions ahead. The New York Yankees activated pitcher David Phelps from the 60-Day DL Saturday according to the Yankees official Twitter page. The team moved Derek Jeter to the 60-Day DL to open a spot on the 40-man roster for Phelps. This Year’s Red Sox Check Egos at Door, Buy Into Roles They Are Asked to Play (Video)

New York Yankees' starter Ivan Nova threw a bullpen session on Thursday and Camden Yards and is confident he'll make his next scheduled start against the Red Sox on Sunday. As reported by Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, Nova threw only 79 pitches in his last start due to tightness in his right triceps.  The good news is he felt no discomfort during his bullpen session.  Both...

He has faced Boston just once this year, allowing three runs in a four-inning start on September 5th. “You never want...

#GetBeard

Three months ago, I wrote a post extolling the virtues of the various beards of the 2013 Boston Red Sox. It was intended as a whimsical post: I thought the scruffy beards were fun, and fitting for the kind of “anything goes” personality the team was developing.  It has since become the most viewed post on my blog, as Red Sox fans actively search for information about their...
