Wednesday was an intersquad day with Memphis and Springfield opposing each other and Palm Beach and Peoria doing the same. Both games were shortened as the two higher affiliates only played 5 innings and the two lower played 8. Sam Gaviglio, who played this past fall in the Arizona Fall League, threw five scoreless innings for the Memphis Redbirds. He should start the season with the Double-A Springfield Cardinals and could be a fast riser through our prospect rankings. He has a lot of Seth Maness in him. Breyvic Valera seems to find his name on these reports every night. While he doesn’t have a standout tool, he can hit and run with the best of them. I would not doubt a major league future as a reserve for the guy who can play everywhere and hits from both sides of the plate. The release of Colin Walsh, who was projected to start with the Springfield Cardinals, there could be a domino effect of movement of middle infielders, and a couple listed on this report could move. I could see Alex Mejia starting at Springfield and Ildemaro Vargas starting at Palm Beach, the former has the better chance in my opinion. Tomorrow, the Springfield club will take on the New York Mets’ Triple-A affiliate as the Memphis Redbirds will be traveling back to Tennessee. Palm Beach will take on Mets’ affiliate Binghamton, and State College will play the independent Long Island Storm. The Peoria clubs will be traveling to Port St. Lucie for road games against the Mets. Here are the results from Wednesday’s action: Memphis beat Springfield 5-0 (5 innings) Jonathan Rodriguez, Mem (1B) 1-2, 3B, 2 RBI Rafael Ortega, Spr 1-2 Cody Stanley, Spr 1-2 Curt Smith, Spr 1-2 Adam Melker, Spr 1-2 Sam Gaviglio, Mem 5 IP, 5 H, 5 K Dean Kiekhefer, Spr 2 IP, 5 H, 2 ER Sam Freeman, Spr 1 IP, H, K Heath Wyatt, Spr 1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, K Justin Wright, Spr 1 IP, 2 H, BB Palm Beach and Peoria tied 5-5 (8 innings) Breyvic Valera, PB (2B) 1-4, 2 RBI Nick Longmire, PB (LF) 1-4, 2B, 2 RBI, R Alex Mejia, PB (SS) 2-3 Ildemaro Vargas, PB (DH) 1-2, 2 R Cesar Valera, Peo (SS) 2-4, R Michael Schulze, Peo (2B) 2-3, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 2 R Blake McKnight, PB 4 IP, 2 H, BB, K Chris Perry, PB 4 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 5 K Mitch Harris, PB 1 IP, 2 H, ER, BB Kyle Hald, Peo 4 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, BB, 2 K Jhonny Polanco, Peo 2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, K Chris Thomas, Peo 1 IP, H, K Dixon Llorens, Peo 1 IP, H, K Follow me on Twitter @CardinalsFarm or on Facebook.
