Chicago-cubs-starting
Jeff Samardzija struck out his 200th batter of the season last night, but the Cubs were not able to take control of the game and suffered a 4-3 lost to the Brewers in Milwaukee. It marks the fourth consecutive loss by the Cubs making them 3-7 in their last ten games.   Samardzija went 7 innings last night and gave up 5 hits on 3 earned runs, including one 2-run home run to Carlos Gomez in the 7th. He was able to get 8 strikeouts though including his 200th against first baseman Sean Halton in the fifth inning.   The Cubs scored on a sacrifice fly in the seventh off the bat of Ryan Sweeney, while catcher Wellington Castillo hit his 8th homer of the season knocking in two runs on the next at-bat. other important offensive player were outfielder Junior Lake and Nate Schierholtz who scored a run and had a double.   The bullpen was not able to hold the Brewers off though, with cubs reliever Justin Grimm giving up a walk-off on a squeeze play by Logan Schaefer allowing Scooter Gennett to score. Grimm got the lost with reliever Jim Henderson getting the win.   Although Samardzija didn’t get his win, he did become the first Cub since Ryan Dempster in 2010 to secure 200 strikeouts and 200 innings in a single season. Samardzija is now second in the National League with 203 strikeouts and fifth in the majors. Samardzija has proved himself as a starter in his second season since making his way from the bullpen, possibly making him a future ace for the Cubs for years to come.
