Found June 27, 2012 on Fox Sports Kansas City:
Perhaps the biggest complaint against Royals left-hander Jonathan Sanchez isn't his cover-your-eyes pitching stats. Yes, those numbers are indeed hideous: A 1-3 record, a 6.21 ERA, 34 walks and 42 hits in just 42 innings. But even more appalling to fans and other observers is that, on the mound, his body language seems to suggest indifference. Not the case, says Sanchez. Sure, I care, he told FOXSportsKansasCity.com. We're human beings. Sure it's frustrating. Sure it hurts. No one wants to go through this. Every single player goes through this at some time. We all want to win. People that don't think we care don't know baseball. They don't know how much work we go through. We work all year and get maybe two weeks off. The rest of the time you work on getting better. We spend all winter, training to get better. So yes, we care and want to win. But we're humans. We're not robots. You can't just throw it the same way every pitch. No one can. Sanchez's biggest issue on the mound in 2012 has been a familiar one during his career: Lack of command. Sanchez, acquired in the off-season from San Francisco for Melky Cabrera, simply cannot throw strikes consistently. During one three-game stretch this season, he threw a total of 270 pitches, but only 134 were strikes not even 50 percent. It's not like I'm trying to throw (balls), he said. Sometimes it's there and it's not called. Sometimes it's there and it gets hit. But you can't just throw it down the middle. This is the big leagues. They'll hit it. You have to work the corners. Sanchez, though, has rarely found the corners, which he attributes to simply being in a slump. It's just not working for me right now, he said. It's a slump. That's what it is. A slump. Everyone goes through it. I'm pitching the same. It's just not working. One theory is that Sanchez, who has been hampered by biceps tendinitis, has lost too much velocity to be as effectively wild as he once was. His fastball, once in the 92-94 mph range with the Giants, has dipped to 88 mph. Hitters, therefore, don't feel the need to chase pitches out of the zone and instead wait for room-service fastballs over the plate. I don't look at the speed, Sanchez said, shaking his head. Speed doesn't get guys out. It's about luck. There's been some bad luck. I don't think speed is the problem right now. The problem could be with his mechanics, but Sanchez, 29, said he's not going to change his approach. I don't want to change anything, he said. If I try to change things, I'll end up a real mess. I just have to trust that it will work out. Yet there may come a point when the Royals simply can't wait on Sanchez anymore and must remove him from the rotation, or worse. I never think about that, he said. Going to the pen, sometimes it helps guys, but I don't think so much for me. I've been a starter all my life. It's who I am. I have had bad slumps before and I got out of them. Right now it's not working but I got to believe it will come back. Sanchez said he was in a similar bad spot back in 2009. I started out struggling and then they sent me to the bullpen, he said. But they still believed in me. When Randy Johnson got hurt, they gave me a chance and that's when I threw the no-hitter. Then I was fine the rest of that year and in 2010. Then I got hurt and didn't pitch much last year. I've just got to work through this. Slumps, Sanchez said, are a part of baseball for pitchers and hitters. Eric Hosmer is an example. You don't give up on a guy like him, Sanchez said. He's going to be a great hitter. He's been in a slump but he's a great hitter. He belongs here. It's no fun at times for him or for anyone who goes through that. But slumps happen and you have to fight your way through them. For now, the Royals aren't going to give up on Sanchez, mainly because they have few, if any, options for a rotation already patched together. We will continue to use him every fifth day and hopefully the results will get better, Royals general manager Dayton Moore said. He's actually had moments where he has pitched well lately."

Recent Success Muddles the Picture of Luke Hochevar

This is a story all Royals fans know well. Drafted number one overall in 2006 ahead of future All Stars, Cy Young winners, and World Series Champions, Luke Hochevar has been a massive disappointment. Following the All Star break in 2011, Hochevar had pitched up to his potential, pitching 79 innings to the tune of a 3.52 ERA. Going into 2012, many people around baseball thought Luke...

Quintero exits as Royals get down to two catchers

Humberto Quintero was a short-term solution for the Royals, acquired in a March 20 trade with the Astros for two minor-leaguers after starting catcher Salvador Perez had knee surgery. Quintero did a creditable job, hitting .232 in 43 games, including 40 starts, and when Perez came off the disabled list Friday, the Royals opted to stick with three catchers for a while. That stretch...

Royals look to figure out starting rotation

The biggest challenge facing the Royals the rest of the season, beside trying to crawl back to .500, will be finding some healthy and competent bodies to settle into the rotation below Luke Hochevar and Bruce Chen. And at this point, the Royals may not be that picky. The Cardinals' bashing of the Royals last weekend exposed the 3-4-5 trio of Vin Mazzaro, Luis Mendoza and Jonathan...

You know, Alcides Escobar is a pretty good shortstop

With last Friday’s return of catcher Salvador Perez (and yesterday’s DFA of Humberto Quintero), starter Felipe Paulino out for the year with an elbow injury, the All-Star caliber play of Mike Moustakas and the struggles of the starting rotation, it’s easy to overlook shortstop Alcides Escobar. But Escobar is quietly becoming one of the Kansas City Royals top players. Escobar...

Burlington’s Power Put on Hold, Bluefield Gets the Win

The Burlington Royals lost to the Bluefield Blue Jays for the second game in a row on Tuesday night. The defeat moved the Royals to 4-4 and is the first time the team has been at .500 in 2012. The Blue Jays confined the Royals to a season-low 4 hits on the night (even in their 2-11 blowout loss to Elizabethton on Saturday, Burlington managed 11 hits). Bluefield's bullpen was...

Odorizzi in final stages of minor league development

When Royals fans aren't wondering when hot-hitting Will Myers will be called up, they're likely wondering the same about right-handed prospect Jake Odorizzi. Odorizzi, the key component to the Zack Greinke trade, continues to dominate at Class AAA Omaha, posting a 5-0 record with a 2.72 ERA. Odorizzi had 10-days off between his most recent start, but Royals fans shouldn...

Rays in search of runs against Royals

The Kansas City Royals have used dominant third innings to cruise in the first two games of this series against the visiting Tampa Bay Rays. The Royals are looking for more early offense Wednesday as they seek their first three-game sweep of the Rays in 11 years. Kansas City (33-39) scored five times in the third inning of Monday's 8-0 victory in the opener, and came up with...

For a change, Royals get consecutive strong starts

The Kansas City Royals got another first-hand glimpse of what it would be like if they had a solid rotation from top to bottom. After Luke Hochevar pitched a shutout Monday, Bruce Chen limited the Tampa Bay Rays to two runs (one earned) in seven innings in an 8-2 win Tuesday. Chen restricted the Rays to five hits and held Tampa Bay scoreless in his final five innings before turning...

Royals 8, Rays 2

Bruce Chen went seven innings in another workmanlike start, Jeff Francoeur and Yuniesky Betancourt both went deep and the Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Rays 8-2 on Tuesday night. Betancourt hit a two-run shot during a four-run third inning against Chris Archer (0-2), and Francoeur added a three-run homer during a four-run eighth to give Kansas City some breathing room. ...

Royals All-Star Update

The All-Star game will be coming to Kansas City on Tuesday July 10. About a month ago, we took a look at 4 players who could be in position to to make the team. While it doesn’t appear that any Royals player will be voted in, it does appear that they still have 4 players in position to possibly make the team. Only one of those is different than a month ago. Billy Butler “The...

Royals-Twins Preview

While they've been under .500 since early April, the Kansas City Royals are hoping to get back to the break-even mark by the All-Star game. If their recent efforts are any indication, they may actually be able to do just that. The visiting Royals try for a season best-tying fourth consecutive win in the opener of a four-game set with the AL-worst Minnesota Twins on Friday night...
