The Pirates beat the Rays 3-2 this afternoon to open up Grapefruit League play…so for the first time in 2013, you can raise it! (Right?) Jeff Locke pitched three strong scoreless innings. He allowed no hits and the Rays didn’t even get a ball out of the infield against him. Jeff had one strikeout and got seven ground ball outs. He allowed one walk, but picked off the runner to quickly erase him. Locke is one of the few players for whom this spring is important, and he couldn’t have gotten off to a better start. Starling Marte had a single and a stolen base out of the leadoff spot. Felix Pie hit an RBI triple. Bryan Morris, Duke Welker, Brooks Brown, and Mike Zagurski all posted zeroes for the Bucs in relief. Vin Mazzaro allowed the two Rays runs. Here’s the box score. The Pirates play at McKechnie on Sunday against the Braves. It’s a 1:05 start and will be broadcast on KDKA 1020.  James McDonald will start. Other notes & links: On today’s broadcast, Tim Neverett revealed that Russell Martin will NOT play SS in the WBC for Canada, contrary to some earlier reports. He will catch. Infielder Ivan De Jesus will not play in the WBC for Puerto Rico, despite being named to the roster a couple weeks ago. The newcomer wants to focus on making the Pirates’ major league roster…and he’ll need to beat out quite a few contenders to do so. Here’s an interview with one of those contenders: newly signed infielder Brandon Inge. Andrew McCutchen wants to steal more bases this year.
