BOSTON -- Max Scherzer came into Thursday night's start at Fenway Park with an 0-2 record and 11.81 ERA against the Red Sox in his young career. Only four games, but back in the first series of the season, Boston got the Detroit Tigers right-hander for seven runs and eight hits in just 2 2/3 innings. That changed Thursday night when Scherzer pitched six innings in helping the Tigers avoid a four-game sweep at the hands of the Red Sox with a 7-3 win. "It's good because the team needed a win," Scherzer said after his third consecutive victory raised his record to 5-3. "Obviously we didn't want to get swept today. "I went in with the confidence I was going to have a good outing today. I know some of their hitters are swinging the bat pretty well, but I wanted to come out there and be better than them tonight." Scherzer, who had struck out 24 over his previous two starts, slogged through the first three innings, giving up three runs and also ...

Berry needs to stay in Detroit

DETROIT -- There is an unsettling notion flying around Comerica Park and it goes a little something like this: Quintin Berry's roster spot is still up in the air. No, it's true. Even after this scalding cup of coffee has managed to inject a little life into the Tigers over the last couple of weeks. Quintin Berry is fast. He plays his tail off. His swing is improving. Most...

Game 2012.52: Yankees at Tigers

Detroit Tigers, 24-27, 5 games behind Chicago, winning streak: 1 game. And it’s Polish-American night. It was all a terrible misunderstanding. A lot has been written about the last day of the current installment of the Ryan Raburn Experience, mostly about the surprise appearance of Raburn in the 2nd spot in the order. Subsequent stories have described this as a last ditch effort...

Your Morning Dump... Where Nava's getting some love

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. Daniel Nava arrived on May 10 in time for the Red Sox [team stats] to fall to 12-19. They’re 15-6 since, good for the second-best record in baseball. Coincidence? Hardly. “I’m absolutely amazed,” said...

Lars Anderson breaks scoreboard in MiLB game

Lars Anderson is one of those legendary minor league sluggers that will probably never get a job as a full-time major league player. But even so, occasionally such legendary power does something that just makes your jaw drop. Take for example, this prodigious blast that hit his own picture on the scoreboard and broke it. If the embedded video doesn't work, click here: &...

Taking Stock: Tigers - Red Sox series

After every series, we'll take stock of how each individual and group performance affects their overall value. Offense Ryan Sweeney: Ryan started the series off strong in game 1, then fell back down to where he started. He continues to impress, it is only a little more sporadic than a month ago. Daniel Nava: He complied a bunch of 1-hitters, and the 1 hit in the second game...

'Baseball Big Three' of David Ortiz, Kevin Youkilis, Will Middlebrooks Leads Way to Victory (Video)

Figuring out how to get Kevin Youkilis and Will Middlebrooks in the lineup together can be a headache at times, but they showed why it's worth it on Wednesday night. David Ortiz, Youk and Middlebrooks all homered and the Red Sox rallied against the Tigers to win 6-4 and take their third straight over Detroit. NESN Nation's Dan Duquette is in a basketball mood, so he's...

Daisuke Matsuzaka Shines in Rehab Start With Pawtucket Red Sox (Video)

Daisuke Matsuzaka may still be dealing with some post elbow surgery problems, but that's not keeping the veteran from making quality starts each time out in the minors. Matsuzaka returned to the mound on Wednesday night, less than a week since having his rehab clock turned back, throwing 5 1/3 innings at Pawtucket and only allowing two hits and a run in what turned out to be...

Video: Big Papi Talks With Kevin Millar & Chris Rose on Intentional Talk

Before taking batting practice this afternoon, Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz took a few minutes of his time to talk with Kevin Millar and Chris Rose on Intentional Talk. I will only say this. This was one of the funniest interviews I've ever seen. Enjoy! {flvremote}http://cdn.ianbethune.com/itbigpapi5312012.flv{/flvremote} Follow Ian on Twitter @soxanddawgs. And be sure...
