Well last night, for real, they attacked and they sort of aided the Indians in their win last night.
Sort of I guess.
I mean Choo knocks one straight up the center where a flock of birds are, and Coco Crisp is like whoa man there's some birds there.
They are calling it a Fly-Off win.
I loved Matt Underwood's call though..
"Coming around third DeRosa is going to win the ball game, it got by Crisp, maybe the birds distracted him!"I love it...
Thank you birds!
It actually hit one of the gulls in the outfield. I say, who needs the Angels when you have birds to screw the other team up.
Major props to Coco though, who's always a good sport about things.
"So it did hit a bird. Crazy things happen in this game," Crisp said. "That's why it's a great game."
Had Crisp been able to field the ball, would he have had a play at plate?
"I had a chance. You never know what the heck's going to happen. You catch the ball, make the throw, good or bad one, and sometimes you get 'em and most of the time you don't, especially from center field," Crisp said. And surprisingly, the Indians are kind of getting embarrassed by all the jokes about the bugs and the birds, Ryan Garko speaks out.
"Something needs to be done," Garko said. "There's got to be a way to get rid of them. It's kind of embarrassing. We look like a bunch of kids playing on an abandoned field. It's kind of funny but kind of not funny."
Enough bird talk for now though. Let's discuss the way this team has been playing. While it hasn't been like complete turn-around type of stuff, it's been decent. It's progress and right now, with the division sucking like it is, I'll take being in fourth place, just a few games back of the White Sox and Twins for the next two spots with interleague play coming up.
"Our guys have been playing better baseball for a while now," manager Eric Wedge said. "They're working hard to put up good at-bats and make pitches."Notice this.. Usually Wedge's last sentence there is the only one he utters. But he preceded that with the fact that the guys have actually been playing better, because they have. It's a huge difference than when they weren't playing good ball in any way-shape or form.
They've got life.
They were down 3-1, having been stifled by the best pitcher in the AL this year, getting what they could. Their bullpen comes in, Soria, no-doubt one of the better closers in the entire game, and they manage to scrap together two runs. Hell, Peralta almost put the Indians ahead but the ball just missed the top of the wall.
This after they got beat down the previous night, 9-0, with one of their best pitchers on the mound in Carl Pavano, getting rocked. Speaking of Pavano, good for him on not blaming his sore neck on the bad start. He touched up on what was wrong, but he didn't make excuses after the game.
"I've had a stiff neck a couple of days before my start," said Pavano. "I don't know if I slept on it wrong or what. The trainers put the tape on my neck and it worked well. It kept the muscle in place so it wasn't biting me as bad."Jeremy Sowers was the pitcher last night and he made some strides. I'll take the runs he held the Royals to, but he needs to go longer and he even mentioned that. He was going good for a while there, with a lead against Greinke, something to feel good about. Then he kind hit things and he was out after five.
Super props to Mark DeRosa last night. He scored twice, including the bird-run. He was on base every time though, three hits, two walks, most of it off Greinke. He was really special.
Alright so we win that series, we got the big time Cardinals coming in and then the Brewers after that, the top two teams in the NL Central, it won't be easy. Let's see what notes are going on.
Anthony Reyes will have that surgery to end his season. But when the surgery is being performed, there is a chance that they'll decide to do Tommy John as well, which would not only end this season, it will take away just about half of next season, ala Jake Westbrook this year, maybe more knowing Anthony Reyes. We should find out tomorrow as his surgery is today. Good luck Anthony.
Grady Sizemore will have an MRI on Monday and things have gotten better. Hopefully the MRI is positive and the continued time away from baseball activities clears up all the issues he's having.
Scott Lewis started for Lake County yesterday, kind of surprisingly if you ask me. His rehab apperance kind of came on rather quietly, which is very good news. He was very good aswell, going three innings, giving up no hits or walks, and striking out three.
Jake Westbrook was scheduled to make his second rehab start last night, but the rain here in Akron was too much as the game was rained out.
Aaron Laffey threw 40 pitches on Thursday, using all of his pitches, a step up from the fastballs and changeups he was only throwing earlier this week.
Things look good for Asdrubal Cabrera as he's going to be sort of "ramping up" in the coming days, and hopefully could be ready to go when his DL stint is over.
Did you see this fan catch two home run balls by the Royals in Wednesday's loss? Amazing.
Finally a sad note. We just are not having a good year so far with the passing of Herb Score and Dick Jacobs, two Cleveland icons. Now, former Tribe shortstop Woodie Held has passed away after losing his battle with cancer at the age of 77. Held was just passed by Peralta for the Indians all-time lead in home runs for a shortstop earlier this year. Condolences to the Held family for their loss and the Indians.
I'll be going to the game tonight, hopefully. Luckily Tomo Ohka and David Huff got flip-flopped, and I'm looking forward to seeing Huff. I haven't been feeling good since yesterday afternoon, so hopefully my stomach holds up and I can go. No work till next Tuesday, so hopefully plenty of blogging updates and stuff. I'm going to attempt to update the board with the draft picks today, but make no promises.
