It's about time to kick off one of our favorite things in all the world: Season Previews. Five years ago, they began as a semi-serious analysis and ended up as half-assed haiku. We're just gonna go with what we know. We'll begin our previews with the reigning World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals and move right along through the National League Central.

Cards prospect Miller not shy on expectations

ST. LOUIS - Confident that this will be the year he reaches the big leagues, Cardinals prospect Shelby Miller took time on the recent Cardinals Caravan to ask David Freese and Jaime Garcia an important question. When I do get to the big leagues, what do I wear? Miller recalled. Because I dont want to look like a fool when I go in there, like wearing flip flops and all the big league...

Cardinals Don’t Need Oswalt, But It Would Be Nice To Have Him

The St. Louis Cardinals technically have a full pitching staff that includes five starting pitchers with a combined eight World Series championship rings, but they still might trade one of them for a pitcher who has no rings. Rumors continue to swirl that the Cardinals will add Roy Oswalt to the rotation before the season begins. Oswalt, 34, has said he wants to remain a starting...

Roy Oswalt and Market Determination Revisited

Yesterday in this space, this author wrote that Roy Oswalt had earned the right to limit his market choices and to stick to his price in negotiations as a free agent. The piece was a counterpoint to another writer who stated that Oswalt "had too big a head" and can move along from the St. Louis Cardinals' feeding trough. The point was also made that Oswalt is well worth...

Infield Depth Is A Big Question Mark For The Cardinals Heading Into Spring Training

Much like last season, the St. Louis Cardinals will enter spring training with a little bit of uncertainty, but for the most part the team should feel comfortable and confident. The Cardinals are, after all, the World Series champions. They currently have seven viable options for the starting rotation (if you include Kyle McClellan and Marc Rzepczynski) and could still land Roy Oswalt...

No long-term solution for substandard Johnson City ballpark

Appalachian League champions on the diamond the past two seasons, the Johnson City Cardinals’ home field conditions are not up to those high standards. Shrinking city budgets meant needed repairs have piled up over the last decade. The club’s owner and parent, the St. Louis Cardinals, has given the facility “continued poor marks,” reports the Johnson City Press. Johnson City...

Phillies Still Remain In Contact With Roy Oswalt

According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports, the Red Sox, Reds, and Phillies all remain in the running for Roy Oswalt. Oswalt is scrambling to find a new home with only two weeks before the start of spring workouts. Oswalt's top choices are the Rangers and the Cardinals, but both have financial limitations. Oswalt had a positive experience in Philadelphia, where he went 16-11...

More Than One Reason Why Beltran Got Away

Why didn't the Giants re-sign Carlos Beltran? The question continues to be asked.

Pirates sign reliever Brian Tallet

Kevin Goldstein from Baseball Prospectus tweeted today that the Pirates signed left-handed reliever Brian Tallet. Tallet’s deal is a minor league contract and does not yet include an invite to spring training (Major League camp). After hearing that an invite to camp doesn’t go along with this signing, I think it is safe to say that Tallet will be starting off the year...

Your Morning Dump...The Sox are still keeping contact with Oswalt

Every morning we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump... ...Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that the Red Sox, Reds and Phillies are among the teams who have remained in contact with the veteran right-hander. While Red Sox general manager Ben...

Cardinals Major League Notebook: 02/05/12

The St. Louis Cardinals will make five of the first 58 selections in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft.

Reuniting the 4 Aces?

Roy Oswalt remains unemployed. Many teams would love his services, but don't have the money and/or roster space to sign him. Roy2 wants to pitch for the Rangers or Cardinals due to those teams' proximity to his Mississippi home, but Texas and St. Louis aren't biting at the 1 year $8-10M price tag Oswalt is commanding. The Red Sox, Reds, and Phillies have also been keeping...

Pirates sign Brian Tallet

The Bucs signed veteran lefty Brian Tallet today. The 34 year-old has suffered through injuries and a couple of poor seasons recently, so I would assume that it’s a minor league deal. Tallet has been reasonably effective against lefties, so he’ll probably join Daniel Moskos and Doug Slaten in the group that will be fighting for a second lefty bullpen slot behind Tony...

(Draft) Picky, Picky

After Edwin Jackson inked a new deal with the Washington Nationals, the St. Louis Cardinals now sit pretty with five of the first 60 picks in this year’s amateur draft. With that many selections so early, the Cards should be in good position to fortify organizational needs. Every MLB team shows time and again that the ultimate weapon to wield is depth. It doesn’t even matter...

Miklasz: Giants look good, but Pats have the goods

The Giants  are the NFL's 2011 St. Louis Cardinals: a rather ordinary team, prematurely counted out, only to launch a magical comeback.
