The Seattle Mariners snapped their seven game losing streak over the weekend, and they came back to take two straight from the Twins. Seattle was able to keep their hot play going by taking two of three games from the A.L. Central preseason favorite, the Detroit Tigers. The Mariners seem to have the Tigers number this season, going 5-1 against them. Overall, the Mariners went 4-2 on their home stand, moving their record up to 15-18. They are currently in third place in the A.L. West, a half game up on the surging Angels going into today’s games.

Jason Vargas stayed red-hot for the Seattle Mariners this year, holding the Tigers to one run in a 2-1 victory on Wednesday night.

Good News: The Mariners have their best record against any opponent against the Tigers at 5-1. The only two other teams Seattle has a winning record against in 2012 are the Twins (2-1) and the A’s (5-2). The Mariners usually rely on their pitching, but showed timely clutch hitting in both victories over the Tigers. Seattle rallied for three runs in the ninth on Monday to win 3-2 sparked by Jesus Montero’s RBI double and John Jaso’s GW sacrifice fly. Jaso then followed that up with a GW RBI single in the eighth inning of Seattle’s 2-1 win last night. Jason Vargas shined again for Seattle going 8.0 IP allowing five hits and one run while striking out six. He stands at 4-2 with a 2.79 ERA on the season, giving the Mariners a true 1-2 punch along with King Felix. Brandon League continues shut down work at closer, picking up his eighth save of the season last night. He has saved over half of the Mariners’ victories (8 of 15).

Bad News: The Mariners almost displayed clutch hitting in all three games but Don Kelly made a tremendous catch on a Jesus Montero fly going into foul territory with the bases loaded to record the final out Tuesday night. Kevin Millwood struggled early against the Tigers on Tuesday as Detroit jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings. Millwood did get through five innings, but he fell to 0-4 with a 5.88 ERA. Brendan Ryan continued to struggle offensively this season for Seattle. He went 2-for-4 on Tuesday with a RBI, but he went 2-for-11 for the series and is batting .157 on the year.

On the Horizon: Seattle hits the road again for 10 games in 10 days. On their last 10 game road trip in 10 days, they went 4-6. The trip starts in Yankee Stadium. This will be the first time this season the Mariners face the New York Yankees. The Yankees stand at 16-14, depending upon the results of tonight’s game vs. Tampa. They are in the middle of a six game home stand, having split their first two games with the Rays. Andy Pettitte will make his season debut on Sunday. The Mariners hope to start the trip on a good foot with Felix Hernandez on the mound on Friday, followed by former Yankee Hector Noesi, making his first start against his former team, and Blake Beavan. Manager Eric Wedge called Beavan a “long shot” to make his start against Pettitte, after he was hit in the arm with a line drive against the Tigers.
