Seranthony Dominguez to re-join Phillies on Sunday

After landing on the IL on August 21st with triceps soreness, the fiery right-hander will finally be making his way back to the Phillies bullpen on Sunday.

High Heat Incoming

Corey Knebel’s placement on the 60-day IL with a tear in his shoulder capsule ultimately paved the way for Seranthony Dominguez to step into the closer role and he has yet to disappoint. In 44 IP this year, he has worked his way to a 1.64 ERA accompanied by 54 Ks and 13 intentional walks. Plus, let’s be real, Knebel’s 3.43 ERA tied in with the recent injury may be the end to his career in Philly once his contract ends following the closure of the 2022 season.

The 27-year-old Dominguez, on the other hand, could be working his way into a contract extension as he has been the most effective reliever out of their bullpen this season. His rehab stint with Lehigh Valley only further highlights my prior statement as he tossed one scoreless frame while walking two and staying between 98-100 on the heater. I’d say he’s more than ready to get back to the bigs and Rob Thomson seems to think the same as his stay on the IL was already planned to be kept to the minimum.

Seranthony Dominguez could propel the Phils into October

As of now, the Phillies currently hold the third and final Wild Card spot with the Milwaukee Brewers looking to edge them out. The many adjustments made to this team during 2022 have undoubtedly set this team up to make their first playoff in a decade. Seranthony Dominguez and Co. are ready for the long road ahead which includes a finale against Washington tomorrow then 2, 3-game sets against Miami and Atlanta on the road.

The Marlins are well within reach of yet another season missing the playoffs so they shouldn’t be much to worry about as the true challenge will be against the Braves. It took them a majority of the season to acquire it but the former World Series champs are back in front in the NL East division. The Phillies aren’t going to win the division this year but if they can manage to continue churning out a winning month, then they’ll be able to punch their ticket to a Red October.
