After losing the first two games of the series to the Minnesota Twins, the Tigers salvaged a split by taking the final two games. Justin Verlander tossed a complete game 4-hitter in the Tigers’ 5-1 victory on Wednesday. Then Prince Fielder hit the game-winning home run in a 7-3 Tigers win on Thursday. Doug_Fister

With the two straight wins, Detroit moves back to one game under .500 at 41-42. They stand 4.5 games back of the division leading White Sox and 2.5 games behind second place Cleveland.

The Tigers host the Kansas City Royals for three games leading up to the All Star break.

Here are a few observations from the Minnesota series:

Fister’s struggles continue

Doug Fister hasn’t had the year that he or the Tigers expected. A side injury led to two separate stints on the DL this season and when he has pitched, the results have been much different than when he dominated last year after the Tigers acquired him from the Mariners. On Tuesday night, Fister cruised through the first three innings of the game without allowing a hit while striking out four. But in the fourth inning things fell apart for the right hander. He allowed six hits and four runs while the Twins brought all nine batters to the plate. Fister went out to the mound in the fifth, but he allowed two more runs without recording an out and was pulled from the game. Fister has now lost his last three starts, allowing 16 runs during that span.

Fister started 10 games for Detroit last season and went 8-1 with a 1.79 ERA and a 0.84 WHIP. In 10 starts this year, Fister is 1-6 with a 4.61 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP. The Tigers need Fister to pitch like he did in the second half of last season if they want to catch the White Sox.

Downs and Ortega impress after call-up from Toledo

When the Tigers sent Luis Marte and Danny Worth down to Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday, it opened the door for two Mud Hens pitchers to pitch in the big leagues. Jose Ortega and Darin Downs were called up to bolster the Tigers’ bullpen and both pitchers were called upon to pitch in their first game up. Ortega went 2.1 innings allowing just one run while striking out four, while Downs pitched a scoreless inning with one strikeout. Downs pitched again in Thursday’s win and was very effective. He tossed three strong innings with five strikeouts taking over for Porcello after he was knocked out of the game in the fourth inning.

Ortega was 3-5 with a 4.23 ERA this year at Toledo with 38.1 innings pitched. Downs was 0-2 for Toledo with a 2.15 ERA in 29.1 innings pitched. Downs provides the Tigers with another left hander out of the bullpen and Ortega is another talented right hander. Both pitchers will need to keep pitching well if they want to stay in the majors, but so far, so good.

Cabrera is swinging a hot bat

It’s well documented that Miguel Cabrera is a great hitter and a great run producer and he showed off his talent throughout the Minnesota series. Cabrera belted out eight hits and knocked in eight runs during the four game series, highlighted by a two homer game on the 4th of July. Cabrera’s batting average is up to .325 and his 70 RBIs are second in the AL to only Josh Hamilton. He continues to thrive in the third spot in the order with Prince Fielder now protecting him in the four spot. So far the experiment to move Cabrera to third base has been successful and his added responsibilities in the field have not slowed down his offensive production. Cabrera is a .317 career hitter and has eight consecutive years of driving in over 100 runs.

Joe Mauer should move to third

For years, fans and media alike have argued whether the Twins would benefit more by moving "injury-prone" Joe Mauer to a less taxing position than catcher. For years, I've been arguing that Mauer is most valuable as a catcher, by a wide-margin, and for...

Twins option Parmelee, call up Deduno

Deduno is scheduled to start Saturday's game in Texas, which will be his first career major league start. In nine starts for Rochester, Deduno was 1-2 with a 2.14 ERA in 42 innings. During that span, he struck out 46 batters and...

Twins weigh in on best baseball flicks

With the summer blockbuster season in full force, we asked several players in the Minnesota Twins clubhouse to give their opinion on the best baseball movie of all time. There were plenty to choose from, but "Major League" seemed to be the overwhelming favorite. Here's a look at which baseball movies the Twins like, and why they picked them. LHP Glen Perkins "...

Deduno lackluster in first MLB start

Starting pitching has easily been the most inconsistent aspect for the Minnesota Twins in the first half of the 2012 season. For proof, look no further than Saturday's game against the Texas Rangers. Right-hander Samuel Deduno, who made his Twins debut Saturday, became Minnesota's 11th starting pitcher in 84 games this year. Deduno was called up from Triple-A Rochester...

Another batting title for Mauer? It's possible

A year ago, Joe Mauer was fielding questions about bilateral leg weakness; now it's about whether he can win his fourth AL batting title. At this time last season, Mauer had missed 56 games and was batting .236, and the only questions he got were related to his health. At the midpoint of 2012, the Minnesota Twins catcher is batting .332 with five home runs and 38 RBI. On Wednesday...

Minnesota wastes chance at key series win

Something about the Minnesota Twins' three-run lead Thursday just didn't feel safe. The Twins should have been up by several more runs, and although left-handed starter Scott Diamond put together another quality start, trouble seemed imminent.Sure enough, the Tigers posted one run each in the fourth and fifth innings and trailed by only a run entering the bottom of the eighth...

Francisco Liriano Has Stayed Down

When Francisco Liriano shut down the Athletics in his return to the starting rotation, many dismissed it as just one start, and one against the Athletics at that. Instead, Liriano has taken that start and ran with it, and six starts later he looks reborn. There could hardly be a bigger difference between Liriano’s first five starts and his last seven: First five starts: 26.2 IP...

Liriano tries not to listen to trade rumors

No other Minnesota Twins player is attracting trade rumors the way Francisco Liriano is, and he acknowledged Thursday that his agent, Greg Genske, has relayed news about interested parties. That, Liriano said, is the extent of his knowledge, and really more than he wants to know. "I don't follow it," he said before the Twins' 7-3 loss to the Detroit Tigers on...

Twins' Liriano enjoys return to form in Texas

Next Tuesday's All-Star Game, in essence, will serve as one grand talent show for the Texas Rangers. An eye-opening eight Rangers will represent their squad in the Midsummer Classic. Yet, Friday night in Arlington, the Twins' starting pitcher outshone every Ranger he encountered. Francisco Liriano flashed back to his 2006 all-star form at times, spurring a 5-1 Twins victory...

Improved form boosts Liriano's trade value

Francisco Liriano is pitching better than he has in a long time, and it might just get him traded. Though the Minnesota Twins are on a roll of sorts, winners of six of eight after beating the Rangers 5-1 Friday in Texas, they don't have the rotation to make it sustainable. In last place all season, they're throwing rookies at the Rangers on Saturday and Sunday, and Minnesota...

Twins 5, Rangers 1

Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau drove in two runs each, Francisco Liriano pitched around six walks and the Minnesota Twins handed the Texas Rangers their season-high fifth straight loss with a 5-1 win Friday night. Liriano (3-7) allowed five hits and one run with six strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings, and the Rangers scored two runs or fewer for the fourth time in five games. The Twins...

Twins' bullpen can't hold off Rangers in extras

Minnesota used six pitchers to again subdue the Texas Rangers' offense for nine innings Saturday night. Unfortunately for the Twins, they couldn't do it in extra innings. Nelson Cruz hit an RBI double off reliever Kyle Waldrop (0-1) in the 10th inning that scored Adrian Beltre to lead the Rangers to a 4-3 victory that snapped their five-game losing streak. ''Cruz...

Tigers Take Series Opener from Royals, Claw Back to .500

The Detroit Tiger fell below the .500 mark on May 16 after an 11-7 loss to the Minnesota Twins, and hadn’t been able to crack the break-even point since. Not until Friday night anyway – 47 games later. We certainly didn’t expect to be “celebrating” the .500 mark in July. Not when the organization announced the signing of prized free agent Prince Fielder, and certainly...
