The Tigers were the easy favorite to dominate the mediocre AL Central. They added Prince Fielder to a team that won the division by fifteen games in 2011, forming a core of starts that also includes Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez, and Justin Verlander. Fielder has mashed since coming to the team, but not surprisingly the overall lineup has regressed (most notably Alex Avila and Jhonny Peralta), though the offense is still in the upper third of the American League. Their pitching is even better than last year's (2nd in the AL), so what's the difference? The big concern when the Tigers signed Fielder was that it would move Miguel Cabrera over to 3b, and the Tigers went from an average defensive team to one of the worst in baseball, according to UZR (note: not so much with DRS, which agrees that the Tigers D is not good but has the Rockies at a whopping -52 runs below average. Hooray defensive metrics!). The White Sox (33-27) and Indigenous Peoples (32-27) aren't exactly ...

Tigers weekly: Perez latest reminder of chaotic 2012

Hernan Perez might end up as one of the many players who finish their Tigers career with exactly one hit. For the forseeable future, he'll be there on the list with pitchers like Jeremy Bonderman, failed prospects like Kevin Hooper and late-career gambles like Vince Coleman. At the moment, though, Perez might best represent the chaos of the 2012 season. A few days ago, he...

No Love For Jeff Samardzija

I was checking out the stats for most of the Cubs players today (and some other players too). When I was looking at what Jeff Samardzija had done so far this year it wasn't how well he's pitched (at least by FIP standards anyway) that stood out to me, but how no rest of season projection expected a damn thing from him the rest of the season. I don't know why this surprised...

Tigers place Dotel on DL with elbow inflammation

The Detroit Tigers have put reliever Octavio Dotel on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right elbow. The Tigers also recalled right-hander Luke Putkonen from Triple-A Toledo before opening a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night. The DL stint for Dotel is retroactive to June 3. Dotel, who is 1-2 with a 4.42 ERA in 21 games this season, hasn...

Dye: Momentum needed for Tigers to turn corner

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland doesn't believe in momentum in baseball. He subscribes to the age-old theory that "momentum is the next day's starting pitcher." I disagree to a certain extent. There clearly is momentum in the Major Leagues. It's the only way to explain how bad teams go on extended winning streaks and good teams on extended losing streaks...

The Detroit Tigers’ Disconcerting Start

The Detroit Tigers entered the season as the clear-cut favorites to win the AL Central, on the back of a $133 million payroll.  Ten days into June, the Tigers are four games below .500 and five games out of first place.  The book on the Tigers coming into the season was that their stellar offense would support a patch-work defense.  Fifty-nine games into the season, the pitching...

Iowa Rizzo left the game with a knee contusion as is listed as day to day. Soto went 1-4 with a 2B in his first game back and Brett Jackson struck out 3 more times.  Smokies No Game Daytona Nelson Perez was 3-4 with a HR and The Greg of Rohan went 2-5. Alcantara continues to impress with his bat in a pitchers league and is hitting .291. Goldstein had a write up about him the other...

An analysis of the Jorge Soler deal: I guess it’s worth it after all

Despite all of my grumbling about the rumored pricetag for Jorge Soler, I was ecstatic when the initial reports today said that the Cubs had signed him to a 9/30 contract. Then we discovered that whenever he has enough service time to be elgible for arbitration, he can opt out of the deal and go through the usual arbitration process to get a higher salary. After thinking on this...

Chicago Cubs Sign 20-Year-Old Jorge Soler, Win Bidding

The Chicago Cubs have now won the bidding to get 20-year-old Cuban outfielder Jorge Soler, according to ESPN Chicago.  Soler will reportedly come to the US soon and then take his physical. Although the terms of his deal have not been released yet, it’s said that the rumored deal is for nine years worth $30 million. Read more at The Dugout Doctors Josh Dhani is the founder...

Conan proposes new Cubs mascots

Conan O’Brien was at it again on his late night show and had some fun at the Chicago Cubs’ expense. Conan had a skit where he came up with some new alternative mascots for the lovable losers, Chicago Cubs. A few of the highlights included the ‘incontinent Chicago Water Tower’, Hal Capone, a Cubs batter who can’t hit a pinata, and the Jesse Jackson 5. Article found...

Octavio Dotel Lands on 15-Day DL; Luke Putkonen Back With Detroit Tigers

Reliever Octavio Dotel, who has excelled in a setup role in front of Joaquin Benoit and Jose Valverde this season, was placed on the 15-day DL Tuesday Continue reading →

Tigers 8, Cubs 4

Jhonny Peralta had three hits and two RBIs one night after he made two costly throwing errors, and the Detroit Tigers rallied to beat the Chicago Cubs 8-4 on Wednesday. Brennan Boesch had four hits, including a solo homer, and made a diving catch in right field as the Tigers improved to 8-1 in their last nine games against the Cubs. The one loss during that stretch occurred in the...

Cubs' declining OBP led to firing of Jaramillo

More than anything else, it was a difference in philosophy that led to the Cubs firing hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo on Tuesday. Cubs president Theo Epstein announced the firing and the promotion of minor league hitting coordinator James Rowson to the job of interim hitting coach before the Cubs beat the Detroit Tigers 4-3 at Wrigley Field.. Jaramillo was hired in the fall of...

Errors costly in Tigers' loss to Cubs

CHICAGO (AP) -- Darwin Barney had three RBIs and the Chicago Cubs used shortstop Jhonny Peralta's two throwing errors in the eighth inning to push across the winning run in a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night. With two outs and two on, Tony Campana hit a grounder to Peralta, whose throw pulled Ramon Santiago off the bag at second. Starlin Castro then hit another...

Tigers likely to add arms and not offense come the trade deadline

When the trade deadline rolls around mid summer for the Tigers, it’s likely that team president Dave Dombrowski opts for pitching help rather than offensive production. But that doesn’t mean the team won’t add run production in some way or another come the deadline. Buster Olney of ESPN.com tweets that Dombrowski at this point actually expects to get Victor Martinez back in...

2012 Home Run Derby Rosters

For the second year in a row, the MLB is letting players pick the rosters for the Home Run Derby. Last year, Prince Fielder and David Ortiz were captains. This year Robinson Cano, who won the 2011 Home Run Derby, is the captain of the American League and Matt Kemp will have the duties of selecting who [...]
