The New York Yankees ranked second in the American League averaging nearly 5.2 runs per game. In three games against the Rays, they scored five total. Rays’ Ryan Roberts hit two home runs off Yankees’ pitcher CC Sabathia in game one of the series. Matt Moore pitched eight innings, holding New York to one run off two hits with nine strikeouts. They lead the Rays to a 5-1 win. It was a 2-2 tie in the ninth inning of game two when Fernando Rodney could hold it for the Rays. A two out, two-run single by Ichiro Suzuki put the Yankees up 4-2. An Evan Longoria solo home run on the first pitch from Mariano Rivera made it a 4-3 game but they could not come up with any last inning heroics. Alex Cobb pitch into the ninth inning in a 3-0 game as the Rays shut out the Yankees in the final game of the series. Closer Fernando Rodney helped finish off New York in his 2/3 ninth inning for his third save of the year. The Rays begin a four-game series against the White Sox in Chicago on Thursday.
