Ryan Theriot never exactly captured the hearts and minds of St. Louis Cardinals fans during his one-year tenure with the 2011 World Champions, hitting .271 with bad defense as a second baseman forced to play shortstop. But Theriot has apparently caught the attention of as many as seven Major League teams. The Tampa Bay Rays have apparently become more interested of late, while the Atlanta Braves, New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds, Colorado Rockies and Houston Astros have also shown interest in the second baseman. The Cardinals did not tender a contract to Theriot, who has been on the market for a month now. Instead, they went with Rafael Furcal at shortstop and will likely go with Skip Schumaker or Daniel Descalso at second base. If Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan has coached his final game, his players will have the satisfaction of knowing he went out on top. The club announced Thursday evening that the longtime pitching coach was taking a leave of absence to be with wife Jeanine as she continues to recover from surgery to remove a brain tumor. Duncan missed more than a month down the stretch to be...

Cardinals announce coaching staff changes

ST. LOUIS, Mo. Following yesterdays announcement that Pitching Coach Dave Duncan is taking a leave of absence, the St. Louis Cardinals announced today that Derek Lilliquist will serve as Pitching Coach and Dyer Miller has been named Bullpen Coach. Lilliquist, 45, was the Cardinals Bullpen Coach last season, and he took on the teams Pitching Coach duties last August when Duncan asked...

Cardinals at the 2007 All-Star Game: Who remains?

“Breaking up that old gang of mine.” So it goes for an organization once known for its stability, the St. Louis Cardinals. In the process of searching for something, I sometimes come across unusual items completely unrelated to my immediate objective. Interest in the following photo knocked me off my original quest, at least temporarily. It was taken by photographer-supreme Scott...

St. Louis Cardinals Might Not Be Favorite To Win 2012 NL Central

Optimism reigned the day following the St. Louis Cardinals’ 11th World Series championship, but three months later that optimism might turn to skepticism. The Cardinals had just won one of the most dramatic World Series ever played on October 28, and it looked like the team might bring back the entire coaching staff and nearly the entire roster. At that point St. Louis celebrated...

Meet The New Girl For MLB.com

St. Louis Cardinals beat writer Matthew Leach recently announced that he will be heading to New York in a new role for MLB.com.  Shortly thereafter, Jenifer Langosch, of the Pittsburgh Pirates beat, was announced as his replacement on the Cards beat. Pitching Coach Duncan Might Be Cardinals’ Biggest Loss Yet

St. Louis Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan might be the biggest loss to the team this off season. Before the “humidor era” in Colorado, any hitter who accomplished anything in the mountains was marked with a mental asterisk. For those not familiar with the humidor, it’s a device the Colorado Rockies use to essentially weigh-down baseballs to keep them from riffling through...

Dave Duncan Departs

The changes in St Louis continue.  Thursday Joe Strauss reported Dave Duncan will step down as the St. Louis Cardinals pitching coach. Duncan has had one of the more remarkable baseball careers.  A catcher, he broke into the majors as an 18-year old with the Kansas City Athletics (1964), playing in 25 games.  Although he returned to the minors for the next 2 seasons (due to major...

Cardinals tab Lilliquist to fill in for Duncan

Dave Duncan stepping down as Cards pitching coach

When Tony La Russa retired from managing the St. Louis Cardinals, the presumption was that pitching coach Dave Duncan would immediately follow him off the stage. The signs, after all, were there. Not only was the famous La Russa-Duncan coaching team breaking up, but Duncan's wife was also sick and needed care. "Personal reasons" could have been cited and no one would...

Lou Brock happy to help at Night of Memories

Although base running arrogance didn't come naturally to Lou Brock, he developed it in a hurry after being traded from the Chicago Cubs to the St. Louis Cardinals back in June of 1964.
