Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com says the San Francisco Giants and outfielder Melky Cabrera have agreed to pick up the contract talks after the season. Heyman says it’s believed that the G-men offered Cabrera a 3-year deal worth $27 million a few weeks ago.   Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle says (via twitter) the Giants have looked into signing first baseman Lyle Overbay, but he’s not eager to to go to Fresno to get some work in first. Overbay would sure be a nice option off the bench and add some depth to the bench. We knew the Giants needed some bullpen help, and they were able to snag reliever Jose Mijares off waivers from the Royals on Monday. Hunter Pence has had 30 AB’s in a Giants uniform and only has 4 hits, which is a .133 average. However, he still has 5 RBI’s in his first 7 games as a Giant. He was brought in here to add some pop to the lineup and drive some runs in! Don’t forget to go to the SF Giants Rumors Facebook page to share your thoughts on the latest Gia...

What Will Melky Cabrera Make On The Market?

Melky Cabrera is having a career-year. After posting 4.2 WAR last year, Cabrera has once again been effective. The 27-year-old outfielder has already passed that total this season, accumulating 4.8 WAR so far. Cabrera’s performance comes at a great time for him. At the end of the season, he can become a free-agent. And it looks like he’ll have a chance to hit the market, since...

Giants, Melky Cabrera curb contract talks

The Giants and outfielder Melky Cabrera are putting off contract talks until the offseason, CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman reported. Cabrera was the All-Star Game MVP in the midst of his career year with a .353 average, 11 home runs and 56 RBIs. He was leading the National League with a 152 hits at the end of play Tuesday. Cabrera can be an unrestricted free agent for the first...

Giants Claim Jose Mijares Off Waivers

Earlier today, the Giants acquired left-handed reliever Jose Mijares from the Kansas City Royals via waivers. The Giants simply claimed him off waivers and didn’t have to give up anything in return, so they basically got him for free. Mijares, 27, doesn’t hit free agency until 2015, and he’s actually having a very good season: he’s tossed 38.2 innings across 51 appearances...

Giants, Cabrera cut off contract talks

The Giants whipped the St. Louis Cardinals 15-0 Wednesday, but the day didn't feature only good news for San Francisco fans. It was learned that the team and Melky Cabrera stopped talking about a contract extension until after the season, opening the door for the left fielder to file for free agency and sign elsewhere. It would be a tough loss for the Giants, who struck gold...

Tired of Changing It Annually, Hunter Pence Gets a New, Permanent Twitter Handle

Newest San Francisco Giants outfielder Hunter Pence is a Twitter mainstay.   But his Twitter handle has been anything but.  We first knew Pence as @hunterpence9 during his days with Houston.  Then, in Philadelphia, he was @hunterpence3.  But alas, he got a new team and a new number, 8. From this day forward, he shall be known simply as @HunterPence. Twitter tends not to reassign...

Lyle Overbay: Sneaky Stretch Addition?

Lyle Overbay is available. The 35-year-old was designated for assignment July 31 by the Diamondbacks, a move that set him to clear waivers Friday and become a free agent should no team take him off Arizona’s hands. It’s understandable why the Diamondbacks let Overbay go. He only mustered two hits in his final 25 at-bats for the team as Paul Goldschmidt established himself as...

Mijares' arrival frees Affeldt for possible closing work

The San Francisco Giants got a new reliever Monday when they acquired lefty Jose Mijares off waivers from the Kansas City Royals. There's more to it. The pickup allows Jeremy Affeldt to be available for closing duties if necessary, another sign management isn't 100 percent on board with Santiago Casilla in the ninth-inning role. "With Casilla, trying to give him...

Phillies' sellout streak ends at 257 games

The Philadelphia Phillies sellout streak ended at 257 games Monday night as their matchup with the Braves at Citizens Bank Park only drew 41,665 fans. The Phillies had sold out every game since July 6, 2009, but with the recent trades of Shane Victorino and Hunter Pence plus the Phillies current record, it was bound to happen.   President David Montgomery says: “The number of...

Orioles, Reds and Giants interested in Lyle Overbay

Giants to use closer-by-committe

With the waiver wire addition of reliever Jose Mijares from the Kansas City Royals, the Giants will now use a closer-by-commitee approach with Santiago Casilla and Jeremy Affeldt sharing the duties. According to a report by CSN Bay Area beat writer Andy Baggarly, Mijares is another power lefty similar to Affeldt, which opens the door for manager Bruce Bochy to use Affeldt in ninth...

Royals new slogan should be 'It's About Time.'

The Royals certainly opened themselves up for criticism from the national media as well as a few uninformed bloggers recently. First, the Royals and manager Ned Yost made it clear to the team's infielders that fraternizing with opposing baserunners was no longer going to be permitted, a story you read first here on FOXSportsKansasCity.com. Then the Royals abruptly let go of...

And Now The Rest of the Giants' 2012 Trade Deadline Story

The San Francisco Giants walked away from the 2012 non-waiver deadline in pretty good shape. With the extra-base power of Hunter Pence in the everyday line-up, and the solid-hitting Marco Scutaro in the infield mix, the Giants have assembled the pieces needed to challenge the Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks for the National League West title. The starting pitching needed to dominate...
