Braves would like bigger role Pastornicky

Shortstop -- make that infielder-outfielder -- Tyler Pastornicky has been out in the outfield catching batted balls after taking some hacks in the cage before batting practice for the Atlanta Braves. Pastornicky will likely be optioned back to Class AAA Gwinnett once shortstop Jack Wilson comes off the disabled iist; he's eligible to come off on July 29 but first will be playing...

Game Day Pictures: Braves vs Giants 7-19-12

Huddy yoga   What kind of crazy person sits in section 105 for a noon start? This girl, and three of her twitterfriends. Jane invited Sarah, Carlie, and I to share her friend's corporate seats and we had a ton of fun! Because the sun was so blazing and there wasn't on-field batting practice, I didn't take as many pics as usual. Here are a few, though... Mike Minor was...

Harper returns, Nats-Braves split doubleheader

On the verge of a major stumble, Bryce Harper and the Washington Nationals proved resilient. After Friday's 11-inning demoralizing defeat, the Nationals promptly lost the opener of Saturday's doubleheader and the prized rookie to an injured ankle. Without the Harper in the starting lineup for the nightcap, Washington fell behind by two runs in the first inning. But the...

Braves place Diaz on DL; Nationals recall Lannan

The Atlanta Braves have placed outfielder Matt Diaz on the 15-day disabled list with a bruised right thumb. They also activated left-hander Jonny Venters from the DL and added right-hander Randall Delgado from Triple-A Gwinnett before Saturday's day-night doubleheader against Washington. Diaz batted .222 in 51 games. Out since July 5 with an impingement in his pitching elbow...

Ian Desmond Diagnosed with Oblique Tear

The NL East leading Washington Nationals received some bad news on Sunday as shortstop Ian Desmond was diagnosed with an oblique tear. Desmond, a first time All-Star in 2012, is in the midst of a career year, with 17 home runs and 53 RBI’s in just 89 games this season. In his previous four big league seasons, Desmond failed to top more that 10 home runs. According to a report in...

Nationals Designate Xavier Nady For Assignment

Former Mets fan favorite Xavier Nady was DFA’d by the Nationals today. Nady has been on the DL since June for a wrist injury and was activated today. However, the Nationals are playing a double header and wanted to keep Lannan on the roster to start one of the games, therefore Nady had to be DFA’d. On the season Nady is batting .157 with a .211 OBP, so he would not be a solution...

Despite win, Nationals option Lannan to minors

The Washington Nationals optioned LHP John Lannan to Triple-A Syracuse despite registering a win against the Atlanta Braves on Saturday. Lannan was recalled for Saturday's doubleheader against the Braves and earned a win in the nightap. He allowed two earned runs, five hits, two walks and three strikeouts in seven innings. The Nationals leader with 10 wins last season, Lannan...

Evaluating The Nationals’ History With Veteran "Clubhouse Presence" Players

Every team signs players for their veteran "clubhouse presence.” We're not talking about guys like Jayson Werth that signs a long-term deal. He's usually a guy with a lot of experience, closer to the end if his career than the beginning of it, and he usually contributes in a bench role. Last week, I was listening to MLB Network Radio and former Nats pinch hitter Matt...

No pressure, John...

And so, after the worst soul crushing loss in the brief history of the Washington Nationals on Friday night, followed by a lifeless loss in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader which cut the NL East lead over the Braves to a flimsy game and a half, the Nationals turn to John Lannan -- back in the fold for a day from his exile in Syracuse. Welcome back, John. Don'...

Nationals activate reliever Storen

Washington Nationals reliever Drew Storen, who has not pitched at all this season, was activated from the disabled list on Thursday. But the addition of Storen will mean the end of Rick Ankiel's stay in Washington as the outfielder was designated for assignment. Storen had 43 saves and a 2.75 earned run average for the National last season, but he had surgery in April to...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Ryan Zimmerman homered twice and drove in three runs, and Danny Espinosa and Roger Bernadina each had three hits and two RBIs as the Washington Nationals beat the Atlanta Braves 9-2 to split a four-game series between the top two teams in the NL East. After Washington blew a 9-0 lead Friday night in an 11-10 loss, the teams split a Saturday doubleheader. The Nationals...

Lannan, Detwiler Fuel Series Split Against Braves

Things didn’t look all that good for the Washington Nationals half way through this four-game series against the Atlanta Braves. But a former Nats number one starter and the best number five pitcher in baseball had something to say about that. Friday night was a particularly hard loss for the Nats, as they had a nine-run lead through five innings, which they eventually blew in...

Trade Targets for the Nationals

The hot stove is heating up with the non-waiver trade deadline coming up on July 31st. Now seems like the right time to look at what players the Nationals could go after and what players Washington could offer in order to make a deal happen. Last month we talked about the limitations the Nats may face as the deadline approaches.  Now that we have seen Bryce Harper show that...
