In a vote that should surprise absolutely nobody, Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez was named the phoniest player in MLB.

232 players responded to Sports Illustrated’s survey asking them to name the phoniest player in baseball. These were the results:

    Alex Rodriguez, Yankees 3B 26%

    Nick Swisher, Yankees RF 14%

    Nyjer Morgan, Brewers CF 11%

    Brian Wilson, Giants P 9%

    Brandon Phillips, Reds 2B 5%

According to SI, Swisher, Morgan, Wilson and Phillips were among the top six vote-getters for the distinction of baseball’s most eccentric player. They also note that the bulk of the votes for A-Rod (64%) came from players in the American League, and that most of those (44%) came from his rivals in the AL East.

You may recall that players also voted A-Rod the most overrated player in baseball. I’m starting to get the feeling that Sports Illustrated is just creating questions to pick on the Yankee slugger.

Now if you’re in disbelief and actually wondering why Alex Rodriguez was named the phoniest player in baseball, look no further than this, or this, or this.

  • Not only is he the phoniest, he should give back all the cash he made off of steroids as all those who took should do. Cabrerea and Colon are just a tip of the iceberg,
  • No shock. Up here in the Pacific NW we have known this since 2000.
  • Well, as a Ms fan since day one, I still remember clearly the circumstances of ARod's departure from Seattle - he lied then and he's been lying ever since. Too bad, he was good enough he didn't need to do that, eh?
  • HMM. Interesting i don't see any of the White Sox players on here. The bulk of them are the most phoniest i've ever seen.
  • I'm also disappointed there's only two Yankees, and NO RedSox on this list. I must be missing something. LOL
  • S after everything is said are any actions to be taken aginst these meatheads.Teamowners, sports writers and fans should put up or shut up. If not than who really cares and alll we are doing is banging our chicklets or gums
  • his money and all the records he holds --- just wish your team had him.
  • I am a Yankee fan.
  • I'm a Yankee fan too, and I'll bet that A-Rod and Swisher wouldn't come in #1 and #2 phoniest players if the survey was taken at Yankee Stadium!
  • The man is a baseball player, a darn good baseball player, but a baseball player. So he left the Mariners for big bucks at the Rangers, then moved on to the Yankees where his skills are on the line every time he steps on the field and his personal life is daily fodder for the hyper NY media and fans. Give him a break. He might be "phoney," whatever that means in a baseball player, but sounds like a lot of plain old green eyed monsters to me!
  • Wow. What a stretch.
  • He is just an average player making a superstars salary. Since he had to stop taking ped's, his numbers and health have suffered big time. You can have him.
  • I may not be a big fan of A-Rod's but the three reasons linked to as him being phony are kinda lame...and none actually show him as phony.
  • This just in...Sports Illustrated announces the winner of THE MOST CLASSLESS player in major league baseball. It's a 232-way tie between all the pathetic losers who actually took the time to fill out a ballot asking such a stupid, mean-spirited, and pointless question. Congratulations to them all! At least, they're not phonies!!! Oh, wait...
  • SI has sunk to the category of TABLOID. It has lost its integrity as a legitimate sports publication

And any player who allows himself to be exploited in such survey is a fool.

This "phoniest" labeling of any professional player is nothing short of a vicious slur. SI must be staffed with idiots. SI is deserving of a more appropriate name: Slurring Idiots.
