ATLANTA On Monday, just a few minutes after his team's 13-5 victory over the New York Mets, Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez announced that pitcher Julio Teheran would miss his Wednesday start. The move, part of the Braves' September plan of preserving their anchor starters for the playoffs, enables Teheran (11-7, 3.01 ERA, 14842 K-BB rate) to get some much-needed rest from a sterling age-22 campaign of 26 starts and 161.1 innings. In Teheran's stead, Kameron Loe will assume the Wednesday start against the Mets. Teheran, in turn, would likely take the mound again on Sept. 10 (against the Marlins).

Why the Atlanta Braves title hopes may not be doomed after all

Move over Jason Heyward, a new catalyst sits atop the Atlanta Braves lineup. Jordan Schafer, after a spectacular weekend performance, is making this Jason Heyward injury a lot easier to swallow. Once a highly-touted minor league prospect and heir to the Braves center field, Schafer has had a career of ups and downs. Well, mostly downs. In 2008 he was suspended for 50 games for HGH...

Why don't the Braves get any attention?

The Atlanta Braves are a major league best 84-53, 15 games up on the second place Washington Nationals in the NL East. Their magic number for clinching the division is 11, meaning that they could conceivably have the division locked up at this time next week with a little bit of luck. Yet, Atlanta is somehow slipping under the radar. More attention is being thrust upon the Dodgers...

Braves' Jordan Schafer day to day with back injury

Atlanta Braves outfielder Jordan Schafer had his impressive Monday cut short due to a back injury. The former top prospect exited the contest during the seventh inning after experiencing discomfort in his lower back, though he told reporters -- including Mark Bowman of MLB.com -- after the game that he's confident he'll be able to play today. During the at-bat which ultimately...

Braves call up veteran RHP Freddy Garcia

The Braves have purchased the contract of veteran right-hander Freddy Garcia from Triple-A Gwinnett. The 36-year-old Garcia is expected to pitch out of the bullpen. Manager Fredi Gonzalez says Garcia also could be used as a spot starter in the final month of the regular season. Garcia is 155-106 in 16 major league seasons with Seattle, the White Sox, Philadelphia, Detroit, the...

Chris Johnson: The Best Player You've Never Heard Of

In late January the Atlanta Braves traded prized third baseman, Martin Prado and five prospects to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for outfielder Justin Upton and third baseman Chris Johnson.  It was the blockbuster deal of the off season due to the fact that Braves GM Frank Wren united Justin with his older brother, B.J. in the Atlanta outfield. But to many baseball fan&...

Braves secure 5th consecutive winning season, expand roster

With a 5th consecutive winning season secured, the Braves look to September call-ups and continued success with a hobbled, somehow successful, starting lineup down the stretch. With their Saturday night win, the Braves sat at 31 games over .500 for the first time since October 2, 2004. The Braves won the Miami series taking 2-of-3 from the Fish. Freddy Garcia was called up prior...

Wood beaten 'like a drum,' Marlins stop Braves 7-0

Alex Wood quickly looked ahead after a rare ugly loss. ''It's how you bounce back, you know?'' Wood said after following up a dominant August run with the shortest start of his young career. Wood gave up a career-high seven runs while lasting only 2 1-3 innings Sunday, and the Atlanta Braves' six-game winning streak ended with a 7-0 loss to Nathan Eovaldi...

HRs by Gattis, Simmons, lift Braves past Mets 3-1

Just when it looked as if one mistake pitch might be too much for Kris Medlen and the Braves to overcome Tuesday night Evan Gattis and Andrelton Simmons stepped up and demonstrated again the resuscitative powers of the home run. After Gattis hit a tying solo homer in the seventh inning Simmons hit a no-doubt-about-it two-run shot two batters later to lift the Braves to a 3-1 win...

Marlins beat Wood 'like a drum'

Alex Wood quickly looked ahead after a rare ugly loss. ''It's how you bounce back, you know?'' Wood said after following up a dominant August run with the shortest start of his young career. Wood gave up a career-high seven runs while lasting only 2 1/3 innings Sunday, and the Atlanta Braves' six-game winning streak ended with a 7-0 loss to Nathan Eovaldi...

Freeman's five RBIs power Braves

Freddie Freeman had never faced Daisuke Matsuzaka and said he didn't bother looking at video to prepare for the right-hander. It didn't matter. All Freeman had to see was see Matsuzaka's Mets uniform. Freeman homered, doubled and tied a career high with five RBIs, powering the Atlanta Braves past New York, 13-5, on Monday. Freeman has thrived against Mets pitching this...

Astros get C Pagnozzi from Braves

The Houston Astros have acquired catcher Matt Pagnozzi from the Atlanta Braves for cash considerations, a day after All-Star catcher Jason Castro sprained his right knee. The Astros haven't said how long they expect Castro to be out. But his injury Sunday left them with just one healthy catcher on the roster in Cody Clark. Catchers Carlos Corporan and Max Stassi are both on...
