Found May 25, 2013 on Phillies Nation:
With Chase Utley on the disabled list and Ryan Howard on the precipice of injury with his hurting left knee, there has been an outcry from some fans for the Phillies to call up. To some, the Ruthian-type hero from last year who blasted 20 home runs in one month, and 51 between three leagues is the obvious choice for a team which so desperately needs an offensive boost. But to others, his recent 0-for-21 slump warrants some more minor league seasoning before joining the Phils. In talking with Ruf today at Lehigh Valley, it was clearly evident that he, nor anyone else is particularly worried about his recent skid. He does not feel like it is a mechanical issue, pressure to perform, or a lack of confidence at the plate. In fact, Ruf is extremely sure in his abilities and makes absolutely nothing of his struggles of late. To him, it is just the natural ebb and flow of the game. Here is some of what he had to say about dealing with his slump: “Everybody struggles in baseball at some poin...

Philadelphia Phillies storyline: Designing the red pinstripes for tomorrow

With the exception of two position players, there is a new squad being built by the Philadelphia Phillies around Domonic Brown. Three are on the parent club, three are at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, and two are with Single-A Lakewood. TAL’S HANDY CAPS WELCOME, NEWCOMERS: By design my articles represent a baseball man’s thinking, the view from the dugout and the GM’s box. Most...

For some reason, this Philadelphia Phillies fan made the trek to Miami to watch his team take on the Marlins Wednesday night. But it looks like he had no interest in watching the actual game being played on the field, though. A person sitting behind this man sent in the photo to Deadspin with the following details:This guy has his MacBook, iPad, and iPhone in the front row at the...

Philadelphia Phillies 2B Chase Utley Hits Disabled List, Other Notes

The Philadelphia Phillies have had to place second baseman Chase Utley once again on the 15-day disabled list, this time for a strained right oblique which is retroactive to May 21st. Luckily for him and the team the strain is considered pretty mild and shouldn’t take too long to heal. Of course with the wear and tear on his body after several seasons in the major leagues, nothing...

Mini Mart Back to the Bigs

Mcall.com Michael Martinez has been recalled from Lehigh Valley to take the roster spot of Chase Utley, who hits the DL with an oblique strain. Yes, that Michael Martinez. No, we still will not see Darin Ruf, or even the young second baseman Cesar Hernandez, take the place of Utley. I thought we had seen the last of Martinez last season, but apparently not. As Corey Seidman so eloquently...

Young, Brown Propel Phils Past Nats

Domonic Brown swatted his sixth home run in May and knocked in two to power the Phils. (AP) Consecutive two-out hits by Delmon Young and Domonic Brown plated a pair of runs in the eighth inning and keyed a 5-3 Phillies victory over the Nationals in D.C. on Saturday night.  In what is beginning to seem like an every start occurrence, Jonathan Pettibone admirably battled through...

Kendrick Struggles in Loss to Nats

Kyle Kendrick was out of sync all night (PHOTO: AP) Kyle Kendrick struggled for the second straight outing on Friday night, and the Phillies dropped the first of their three game series with the Nationals, 5-2. Kendrick and the defense had a very tough time in the fifth inning, giving up four runs in that frame alone. The inning started off with a Bryce Harper single, and the...

Progress Report for Ruben Amaro's 2013 offseason moves

The Phillies are two games away from the 50-game mark of the season and it gives us a decent sample size to start bashing constructively criticizing Ruben Amaro's 2013 moves. Ruben Amaro attempted to squeeze one last drop form the best era in Philadelphia Phillies history. Limited payroll flexibility and a barren farm system made that task a difficult one for Rub. As opposed...

SYMPATHY FOR MICHAEL MARTINEZ

When Michael Martinez was called up to replace Chase Utley on the Phillies roster Thursday, there was pure outrage from the entire Phillies phanbase. Twitter almost broke. Why the editor-in-chief of this very website was sent into a psychotic rage. I think the igniting of torches and the sharpening of...
