The New York Yankees would love to trade starting pitcher, A.J. Burnett. The Chicago Cubs would be thrilled to deal left fielder, Alfonso Soriano. While they say that two wrongs don’t make a right, could the Yankees and Cubs swap their problems over the next few weeks? New York cannot find a taker for Burnett, who has two years and roughly $33 million remaining on his contract. Chicago would love to unload Soriano, who has three years worth approximately $54 million left on his deal. With that being said, would it make sense for the Yankees to reacquire Soriano to platoon with Brett Gardner in left field and serve as a designated hitter in the spacious Yankee Stadium? Also, would it make sense for the Cubs to bring back Burnett to the National League, where he found his greatest success? Simply put, the answers are yes and yes. Hear me out before questioning my sanity. The Cubs unloaded Carlos Zambrano to the Miami Marlins for Chris Volsatd, who has been a disappointment to sa...

  • At this point, ridding your team of a major league player who drops fly balls, misses the cut off men and continues his arrogant stroll around Wrigleyfield is a blessing. His contract will always be one of the worst deals EVER in major league baseball. Lets put it behind us and move forward with players that can actually catch a fly ball (what a concept at the major league level) and share a passion for the game.
  • 1)A.J.'s only really good year was 18 wins in Toronto, not N.L.
2)Hal, "baby Boss" has demonstrated his desire 2 cut payroll,
they acquire additional/not less salary swapping A.J. 4 Soriano.
    3) What sense does it make to dump one "HEAD CASE" 4 another?
    4) NO full-time place on current roster/so getting Alphonso won't give him enough AB's 2 have great impact. They need DH slot 4 A-Rod,Jeter,& possibly Monetero/so far reportedly projected as heir apparent to Posada's role last year.
    5) Yanks need starting pitching so bad-that "designating" a guy like A.J. as your BACK of the ROTATION #4/5, who'll probably go something like 12-14/4.99-5.25 ERA/lead A.L. in wild-pitches & BB's is liveable if offense, defense,base-running,bullpen,& 1,2,3 starters is all strong, & it probably will be.
6)A BIGGER QUESTION, is what 2 do with Montero? The truth is that it's impossible to know for sure he will be the "monster" hitter he seems to be over a full season. The Yankees have traditionally been known as a team who mortgages the FUTURE 4 a W.S. 2day. If they are intent on developing the next generation of Bernie W.,D.J.,Posada,Andy P.,& Mo - then they keep Montero & the rest of their young talent. But, if that is indeed the case, why are I.Kennedy & the kid CF who went 2 Detroit gone, in return 4 C.Granderson? I'm not bashing Grandy, he had a great year, but, there seems to be a bit of uncertainty in Yankeeland.
  • I have a better idea. Trade Cashman for Soriano. And throw in Burnett. That way we get rid of two losers for the price of one.
  • No, they don't need that problem either!
  • Agreed---no way that happens. Especially since Soriano has THREE years left on the deal. I'd rather have Andruw Jones for 2 million. Beside, Soriano still hasn't adapted to the being able to hit the outside curve AND his OBP doesn't fit the Yanks (or the new Cubs) mantra either. If you can work out a trade that includes Burnett and a prospect for Garza and then the Yanks are forced to take him (with the Cubs picking up most of the salary), then I would be more intrigued
  • First, why can't u loose mantrasnow. Pathetic.

    Back to baseball...

Soriano based on OPS is about the 4th best hitter on the team. Agree with others, yanks are trying to cut payroll and maintain the DH spot to rest the wounded. Chavez continues to make sense.

    And yes you are insane.

Report: Orioles Inquire With Cubs About Alfonso Soriano

Another trade could be on the horizon for Theo Epstein. A day after sending Carlos Zambrano to the Marlins, the Cubs president of baseball operations is shipping around outfielder Alfonso Soriano and has spoken with at least eight American League teams over the past six weeks, according to ESPN.com. MASNsports.com reports the Orioles are one of the teams that inquired about the outfielder...

The New York Yankees Will Trade A.J. Burnett….In 2013

One of the most popular items on the holiday wishlist of New York Yankees fans was a trading partner that would take A.J. Burnett out of the Bronx.  Nobody cared where he went or who came back in return.  They just did not want A.J. Burnett toeing the rubber in New York Yankees pinstripes or the road grey for any more starts.  I’m definitely no Santa Clause, but I think...

Orioles Notes: Soriano, Pitching, Ramirez, Miller

Yesterday, we heard that the Orioles and Cubs talked about a deal involving Alfonso Soriano.  In order to ship the outfielder elsewhere, the Cubs would have to eat a substantial portion of the $54MM remaining on his contract.  Here's more on Soriano and the Orioles.. Talks between the Orioles and Cubs were probably not very serious, sources told Rich Dubroff of CSNBaltimore...

Are the Cubs Going To Trade Alfonso Soriano?

The Chicago Cubs were able to trade Carlos Zambrano (Thank Goodness), and now are supposedly trying to trade Alfonso Soriano (ya think)? The question is simply- is TheHoyer Destroyer (Jed Hoyer and Theo Epstein) going to be able to deal Soriano? I think ultimately an American League team looking for some right handed pop out of the DH spot will in fact deal for Alonso Soriano assuming...

Pirates Expressed Interest in A.J. Burnett

Ken Rosenthal has an update on the New York Yankees trying to deal starting pitcher A.J. Burnett, and notes that the Pittsburgh Pirates expressed interest at one point (h/t Bucs Dugout). Rosenthal reports that the Yankees haven’t had any success trying to move Burnett, who is owed $16.5 M a year for the next two years. The right hander is coming off back to back years where...

How Money Makes an Albatross

Say the word, "Zito," to just about any baseball fan in some sort of psyche test and you get a response of, "Bad Contract." And the funny thing about us as fans is that we turn Zito into some kind of pariah. There were two things that are not Zito's fault. First, his skills faded. Secondly, despite the signs that his skills were eroding, some schmuck gave...

Your Morning Dump... Where Sweeney may or may not thrive in Boston

Every morning we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. "Last year was probably the hardest year I ever had playing baseball, not from the standpoint of doing good or doing bad, but just mentally I don't wish going from a starter to a backup player on...

Orioles, Cubs Discussed Alfonso Soriano

The Orioles and Cubs have discussed a trade involving Alfonso Soriano, according to Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported yesterday that a couple of teams have inquired about Soriano and at this point there's no indication that Baltimore GM Dan Duquette intends to add Soriano to the left field/designated hitter mix. Soriano posted a .244/.289...

Could Soriano be the next Cubs player to go?

Is an Alfonso Soriano trade realistic for the Cubs? It seems unlikely but there is a chance Theo Epstein will follow Wednesday's deal for Carlos Zambrano with one for the left fielder, who is owed $54 million.

Dealing Alfonso Soriano could be next on Cubs’ agenda
