It’s been a little over a calendar year since the Red Sox called up Will Middlebrooks to the majors. Kevin Youkilis went on the DL, and Middlebrooks took over and won the hearts of Boston fans, even in the midst of a miserable season for the Sox. In his first 41 games, he hit .326/.365/.583. It was a fantastic line, especially for a rookie. His performance, coupled with injuries to Youkilis, caused the Red Sox to trade the veteran to Chicago for some mediocre prospects. Since that trade on June 24, Middlebrooks finished up the year .244/.277/.423 in 34 games. Not the largest sample size, but also not a thrilling performance. Still, Middlebrooks was a fan-favorite last year, a lone bright spot on a bad team. A quick glimpse at Middlebrooks’ 2012 peripheral stats show that maybe the team jumped the gun on handing him the hot corner position for the foreseeable future. His Batting Average on Balls in Play (BABIP; an indicator of luck) was .335, which shows that more of his ba...

Dan Shaughnessy off-base with David Ortiz accusations

Ben Whitehead Contributing Writer It was only a matter of time before the question arose. You know, THE question that everyone in baseball asks when a player is doing well. No, not “what substance is that on his arm?” (Sorry, Clay). The other one. “Is he on the juice?” At 37 years old and batting .414 with a 27-game hitting streak, David Ortiz is facing the question. Again...

Stephen Drew’s Walkoff RBI, Four-Hit Night End His ‘Spring Training,’ Give Red Sox Boost at Perfect Time

The first two weeks of the Major League Baseball season are always the most fun for stat heads. Over the course of just a few games, a perusal of their favorite teams’ box scores can show players hitting .500, .625 or even .800. Every hit can send the batting average up a dozen or so points, while a slump can put a usually dangerous slugger well below the Mendoza line. For Stephen...

Red Sox call up reliever Jose De La Torre from Pawtucket

After seven long years pitching in the minor leagues and going through Tommy John Surgery in 2008, Jose De La Torre will finally get his chance to pitch in the majors. On Thursday, the Boston Red Sox optioned pitcher Allen Webster, who struggled against the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday allowing eight runs in less than two innings, to make room for De La Torre. Since being acquired...

Red Sox Pitchers Already Taking Batting Practice to Help Prevent Injuries During Interleague Play

The Red Sox don’t open up their road interleague slate for another three weeks. But that doesn’t mean they’re not already preparing. Red Sox pitchers have already begun taking batting practice. Boston doesn’t travel to an interleague park until May 29 in Philadelphia, but manager John Farrell thinks extra preparation swinging the bat will serve the club well when it does...

Red Sox Suffer Sloppy ‘Eighth Inning Uh-Oh’ Against Royals in Otherwise Forgettable Game (Video)

The Red Sox might have lost more than a game on Tuesday night after a couple of injuries left the team without Will Middlebrooks and David Ross for the later innings. That said, they still did lose a game in pretty unattractive fashion. Boston couldn’t solve Twins starter Scott Diamond and only scratched across one run in the ninth inning to avoid a shutout while falling 6-1 to...

John Lackey’s Costly Miscue Continues Trend of Overall Progress Being Overshadowed

John Lackey really can’t catch a break. Lackey pitched very well in Thursday’s loss to the Twins, yet it’s one play that ultimately doomed his outing and overshadowed everything else that went right. What makes the whole situation stink even more for Lackey is that it isn’t the first time this season he’s had an unfortunate sequence bury him. The Red Sox jumped out to a...

Battle of the Youth

Allen Webster will get his second start tonight. Photo from the Boston Globe. Allen Webster is set to make his second career start tonight, according to mlb.com. He'll match up against Jose Hernandez, and it should be an interesting matchup of two promising young talents. According to mlb.com, Webster hit an average velocity of 95 during his last start in April. He is currently...

Looking for a presentable setup guy

Setup guy in there somewhere? Look no further, I have found the Red Sox 'setup' guy. He might be a bit unrecognizable in this picture, but after he sorts out his off season hair and beard issues, we got our setup guy in Andrew Miller. I think since shaving the beard he has been a tad sharper, is throwing a tad more on the corners, and has a tad more control of his nasty...

Video: Red Sox Walkoff With 6-5 Win Over Twins

Clay Buchholz wasn't at his best on Monday night. But his offense picked him up. And it was Stephen Drew who delivered the game-winning hit as his walkoff double in the 11th inning gave the Boston Red Sox a 6-5 win over the Minnesota Twins at historic Fenway Park. {mp4remote}http://mediadownloads.mlb.com/mlbam/2013/05/07/mlbtv_26910305_1200K.mp4{/mp4remote...

Blue Jays-Red Sox Preview

Once owners of the best record in the majors, the slumping Boston Red Sox now find themselves out of the top spot in the AL East for the first time this season. The Red Sox hope to get back on track and avoid their seventh loss in eight games Friday night when they open a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park. Boston (21-14) has one win since a major league...

Shield the kids' eyes...this one was UG-LEE

And it was ugly almost from the very start. Following a lead-off strikeout of Jamey Carroll by Red Sox rookie starting pitcher Allen Webster, the Twins banged across 4 runs in the top of the 1st inning en route to a 15-8 rout of Boston at Fenway Park. Webster (pictured) didn't get through the 2nd inning, going 1.2 innings charged with 8 runs (all earned) on 6 hits (2 were...

Prospect Notebook: The Other Guys From the Hanrahan Trade

Joel Hanrahan was placed on the disabled list in Boston yesterday with right forearm tightness. I’ve pointed out in the past that the Hanrahan trade is looking good, simply because of how Hanrahan’s value has plummeted, Mark Melancon has rebounded to a top reliever, and Stolmy Pimentel has gotten off to a great start in Altoona. The fact that the Pirates got four years of Melancon...

Afternoon Red Sox Delight - 5/9

After getting spanked last night, the Boston Red Sox look to salvage a split of their four-game series tonight with the Minnesota Twins at historic Fenway Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. If you live in the Red Sox television market you can catch the game on NESN. If you live in the Twins television market, you can catch the game on Fox Sports North. And if you can...
